It looks like they have been dismantling them and that this dock is now for unloading because the dock to the west is used for loading.

C&O used to own all of the dock land. Note the ferry slip at the tip of the penensula.

By 1989 there were still a lot of yard tracks to store hopper cars. I have read that they stored so many cuts of hoppers because they contained different grades of coal.

By 1995 coal was stored in piles rather than hoppers. I also noted there is now a tunnel under the James River. The expense of many hopper cars was eliminated by the development of long conveyor belts, coal storage silos and coal handling equipment.

The railroad no longer operates the dock. It is now operated by a couple of independent companies.

I wonder how much lower the ship on the left will be when it is full. Obviously, the ship on the right is still empty.

The wheeled reclaimer must have been turning and moving rather fast as the satellite passed overhead.

This photo confirms that the wheeled reclaimer is also a stacker.

This video is of a different dock, but it shows the operation of a stacker/reclaimer.
(new window) It looks like this terminal.

Is this an unloader that sucks the coal out of a ship?
