Lambertville, NJ: Alexauken Creek Aquaduct of Delaware and Raritan (D&R) Canal

(Satellite)

June 18, 2022: Metrotrails posted
Delaware and Raritan Canal towpath break on the Alexauken Creek aqueduct in Lambertville NJ. The Flemington Branch rail bridge unused since 2002 is seen beyond.

The tree must be masking the broken part in the photo below. Google Maps labeled it "temporarily closed." I thought the aqueduct looked rather full in the Metrotrails photo. Here is one with it overflowing into the creek.

The damage is because of Hurricane Ida, Aug 26, 2021. As of a May 18, 2022 update: "CLOSED: Canal bridge over Alexauken Creek in Lambertville.  Please follow the path closer to the river between Coryell Street to the Holcombe Jimison Farm (follow the posted detour signs)." [DandRcanal-update2]

I don't know if an overflow is common or if it is rare and it inspires people to take a photo.

We are looking upstream with the Pennsy railroad bridge in the foreground. So in the center background only a small part of the aqueduct is overflowing in Nov 2017. I'm sure the people boating on the creek appreciate less overflow.

What did that massive center pier use to hold?
