New Eagle, PA: 1948-2013 370mw Mitchell Power Plant

(Satellite)

300mw Unit 3 was fired up in 1963 and retired in 2013. [gem]

"Units and In-Service Dates: Unit 2: 82MW oil fired (1949), Unit 3: 288 MW coal-fired (1963). (Unit 1 was commissioned in 1948 and decommissioned in 2003)." It was retired rather than "meet the costs of complying with the Environmental Protection Agency's Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS)." [gem_older]

According to the 1954 Monongahela topo map, the railroad that served this plant was Pennsy.

Here's another shot from Saturday morning in New Eagle, from the marina at Hall Memorial Park. The golden hour sun was hitting the old Mitchell Power Station and the valley nicely, and when the towboat and barge had traveled down the river far enough to include them both in the same frame, I took advantage of that and took this shot. I haven't taken a whole lot of photos in the past with the Mitchell Power Station, but I'll have to include it in more images, as it does create a unique element to compositions down by the river in New Eagle. Enjoy!

Not a steel mill, but an old coal power plant, formerly known as the Mitchell Power Station along the Monongahela River in New Eagle, PA. Still felt like this image would be appreciated here.
Fred Burwell: They had a turbine wreck (in 70's, I think) that shot big chunks through the wall and halfway across the river.

Arrows point to missing glass block where the parts ejected.

Given those storage tanks, it looks like it could also burn fuel oil.

This 2018 article discusses what might be done with Pennsylvania's closed power plants.
[Since a 2023 street view shows that it is still standing, evidently they are still trying to figure it out.]

FirstEnergy's Mitchell Power Station operated from 1963 until late 2013. The former 370 MW coal-fired power plant is located in Courtney, Pennsylvania along the Monongahela River. Two wastewater treatment lagoons were also operated on-site and contained coal ash.
Mitchell Power Station is listed among the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's potential damage cases, indicating that it has potentially polluted groundwater or surface water at levels which threaten human health and the environment.
