Bill Edrington: View looks west toward Charleston. The depot was taken out of service in 1953 after the New York Central installed a GRS Traffic Control System (CTC) on the old Big Four main line between Sandford, IN and Pana, IL. With TCS, passing sidings were remotely controlled by the dispatcher at Mattoon, eliminating the need for operators at a number of small stations like Ashmore.

Rare photo of the depot at Ashmore, Illinois on the St. Louis Division, about 1910.  The view looks west toward Charleston.  The depot was retired by the railroad in 1953 after TCS (CTC) had been installed between Sandford and Pana.  With TCS, passing sidings were remotely controlled by the dispatcher at Mattoon, eliminating the need for operators at a number of smaller stations.  Ashmore had previously had operators on all three tricks.  It was the scene of a fatal head-on collision between eastbound freight train Third #80 and westbound passenger train #11, the Southwestern Limited, on September 16, 1942.

Originally the Big 4 then The NYC put in new electronics and this depot closed.
Darrell Price In-Jail: Originally the railroad that laid the track was known as the Terre Haute Line with a Springfield IL man by the last name of Mattoon.
Daniel Briseño: Darrell Price In-Jail it was originally the Terre Haute and Alton RR. 2 sections were completed by Job and Jonathon Brown around 1840. It became the Indianapolis and St Louis RR before ultimately becoming part of The Big 4.

I presume it was the rectangle in the northwest quadrant of Ohio St. and the tracks.

The buildings east of Ohio Streat in the above aerial would have been the grain elevator. It has grown considerably.

I wondered if the many small bins mean they market grains in addition to corn and soybeans. But I could find no evidence for the storage of additional grains on their web site.
