Canton, IL: Abandoned Ethanol Plant

Jan Smith -> Peoria Illinois Railroads Trains & Shortlines
Ethanol plants are a rather recent development. Yet some have gone bust already.
Jan posted other pictures and her comment was:
Just out by the Power plant and ethonal plant in Canton. Any idea what is up with the ethonal plant. Werent they suppose to reopen then it got quiet. ( This is related to railroads somewhat since BNSF would service it unless KJRY managed to get a hold of the contract) and bnsf currently serves the power plant not too far away.
And Paul Tincher commented: " I heard Aventine bought it and pirated parts from it to upgrade the Pekin plant. Now it's so "part less" it's beyond helping unless someone wants to pour millions into it."

Satellite
Studying a satellite image shows that it has short sidings for corn hoppers and ethanol tank-cars. There is a loop tack for unit trains at the nearby coal generating plant, So they could possibly bring unit corn and ethanol trains to that loop and bring small cuts of cars to this plant to be serviced, but that would tie up an engine and a crew. A shortline might be willing to do that, but not a Class I railroad like BNSF. Also, the corn storage capacity looks small. So it is understandable that this plant has become a "parts inventory" as Paul indicated.
