Decatur, IL: B&O Freight House and Turntable

Summer 1989 at Decatur, IL. Former B&O freight station.-Michael W. Sitter
This one struck me as strange because the single story freight-handling part seems to be about as small as the two-story office part. Normally the single story part is significantly longer.

1916 Sanborn Map, Sheet 25
So I spent some time poking around in a Sanborn Map until I found that it is north of Perl close to the southeast quadrant connector between the Wabash and IC. The railroad was named Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton back in 1916.

1941 Aerial Photo from ILHAP
The freight house is in the lower left corner of the aerial photo. The above photo is an illusion. From the aerial photo, it looks like the handling part is about three times longer than the office part. It looks like the office may extend a little further south than the other part, and that is what creates the illusion in the photograph.

The building no longer exists.

I almost missed it because it does not show up on any of the Sanborn Maps I looked at, but there was a turntable on the east side of the block, and it still exists! Look just west of Jasper Street south of the tracks.

  1. Michael, thank you for posting this picture of the B&O Freight Station offices; my father worked for the B&O out of Decatur for 30 years (1945 -1975) and my sisters & I do not have a picture of where he worked. Our grandfather, father & brother worked for the B&O (now CSX) from 1937 - 2009; 72 years.
