Irvington, KY: CSX/L&N/LH&StL Coaling Tower

(Satellite)

Tim Shanahan shared Lori Champion's photo
Lori's comment: "Not sure if it's actually abandoned but have never seen a train use it. Irvington KY coal shoot." It turns out, she used a phot app to deliberately screw up the edges. Oh well.

Bryan Jones The railroad line is still active with several trains operated by CSX daily. The coaling tower itself is long out of service and has been since the final days of steam locomotive operation by the L&N RR.

LH&StL was the Louisville Henderson & St. Louis Railway. Technically, I should label this LH&StL instead of L&N because that is the label used in the 1928 RR Atlas. The SPV Map labels it as originally LN. The 1928 RR Atlas labels the route going west from Evansville to St. Louis as LH&StL and L&N on the Kentucky page, but as just L&N on the Indiana and Illinois pages. This route in Indiana and Illinois is now the Evansville Western Railway.

Update:

Stumbled onto this coaling tower today in Irvington, KY.
Dan Smith I may build this tower . . . do you have more pictures?
Dennis DeBruler You can use street view to get various angles of the elevator side:
