On State Street in Racine, an old Chicago & Northwestern Railway Depot has found new life as a bus facility.

Completed in 1902, the Racine depot was designed by architects Charles Frost & Alfred Granger. It was considered one of the finest stations in Wisconsin. An underground tunnel allowed passengers to safely cross to the west platform to board the north bound train. During the 1920s as many as twenty-six trains a day stopped here. The depot was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

In 2003, the City of Racine hired Isthmus Architecture to restore and rehabilitate the former depot. This included restoring the original grand waiting room, providing rehabilitated support facilities, restoring the exterior and upgrading the platform and canopy to meet commuter rail standards. The rehabilitated 8,000-square foot facility was completed in 2006. The adjacent railroad track is still active. Proposals have been put forth with the hope of establishing passenger rail service connecting Kenosha, Racine and Milwaukee.
