Bumper to Bumper Banter posted [There are many positive comments about these trucks and just five negative comments.] Carl Morrow: Ford sold out to Freightliner the end of December 1997 that's when we all shut down. Rob Martino: Is that plant still being used by Ford or anyone else? Danny McClanahan: Rob Martino Yes. Kentucky Truck is where F Series Super Duty trucks are made. Benjamin Hahn: Rob Martino Yes, it's much bigger than it was in 81. They build the F-250 thru F-550 and Lincoln Navigator. John Thebold: That’s an amazing facility KTP at one time it was the largest truck manufacturing plant in the free world!! Mark Jackson: John Thebold Now it is the Ford Super Duty assembly plant! 5 million square feet under roof! Laird Conant: Top selling class 8 for 20 some years John Cuthbertson: Did not realize that they assembled the L series and the cargo series on the same assembly line. That is really cool. Jim Nasby: I see there is a "suit" bird dogging the line. Jim Nasby replied to a deleted comment: Ron Collins, I realize they no longer wear suits, when I started they still wore shirts and ties. These days production supervisors wear red polo shirts, engineers blue, and maintenance supervisors black. My point is supervisors like to stand there and watch the line. [According to various comments, they were made with Cummins, Cat and Detroit engines. And a 3208 636cu diesel was made by a joint venture between Cat and Ford. A lot of comments have a photo of a truck. And some comments say they are still using their Ford Truck.] |
Note the line shafts.

The truck plant ships vehicles and receives parts via CSX/L&N. The plant and its industrial spur is purple because it was added to the 1965 base map. Trucks were made in the 1950 plant until they were moved here in 1969.

Evidently the railroad is a beltline railroad because it connects with the CSX/L&N just a little west of the plant and with the NS/Southern east, then north, of the plant. It goes past the GE Appliance Plants on its way North to the Southern route.

Back in 1955, which was before Interstate highways, it received and shipped by rail. Now it just ships.

HatfieldMedia has a video tour of the truck plant. The plant grew from 2.3 million sq. ft. to over 6 million. I skipped from 2:00 to 3:30 because of talking heads. I quit watching after the truck left the plant (10:00). |
This 4:46 video called it the biggest truck plant in the world.
