NorthAmericanInterlockings: no entry
This is a town that used to be served by three railroads, but now it has none. What is interesting is that it appears that two of the abandonments were rather recent: UP and NS. One of the advantages of recent abandonments is that rails-to-trails has become popular and allows one to see were the tracks were. Since the Linchfield & Madison and NKP paralleled each other through town, the Madison County Transit Nickel Plate Trail seems to alternate between the two right-of-ways (RoW). The L&M was north of the NKP. The IC came in from the East and crossed the NKP to merge with the L&M for access to the St. Louis area. The IC RoW is now the Glen Carbon Heritage Bike Trail.

Here's a shot from June 66 by my dad, Michael J Kelly. View is looking across the C&NW, then the NKP as the IC curves off to the upper right towards Springfield & Chicago. The IC joins the C&NW lower right, heading with the NKP in the background towards Granite City. Edwardsville & beyond is to the left. |

For you NKP modelers & historians, this is one instance where the company track chart is wrong. It shows the tower where the ICRR ties into the L&M RR. The tower was actually in the southeast quadrant of the NKP-ICRR crossing as clearly seen in this photo. Just a little trivia....... |
Worked with all 3 shifts of oprs at Glen starting back in 1969. I was a train dispatcher for the old Illinois Central RR for nearly 25yrs. Worked the Springfield Dist most of the time. Timetable and train orders. Before that I was a telegraph opr for several yrs.
