Ironwood, MI: C&NW Museum/Depot

(Satellite)

Chicago & North Western Historical Society posted
Once again we post a photo postcard photo of a C&NW facility, this time of the depot at Ironwood, Michigan. Ironwood was a BIG money maker for the C&NW. The depot is now a fine museum filled with a lot of C&NW material.
Paul Clore: The C&NW passenger trains would back in from Hurley, Wisconsin then return to Hurley to continue their journey. Iron ore was king in this area.
Jeff Ash: My dad worked at that depot, handling freight for Railway Express Agency from 1958 to 1961. Ironwood was such a small town that he walked just a couple of blocks to work. That REA office closed in 1961.
Tim Schneider: if it was a big money make for cnw why'd they leave town so early on?
Dennis DeBruler: Tim Schneider The Gogebic Iron Ore Range became obsolete and/or the ore docks in Ashland, WI, took the iron ore business.
Sean Kelly: Is that the Wisconsin Central depot behind? Did the tracks run parallel through town?
John Pozega: Sean Kelly yes the WC/ Soo Line had a depot downtown Ironwood near the CNW depot. There were at least 3 sets of parallel tracks running west east with crossings on Lowell and Suffolk streets. My mom’s dad moved to Ironwood in 1937. Worked for the Soo Line from 1919-1969. Retired as section foreman in ironwood. There was tracks going east west in north ironwood. Crossing north lake road just north of rices bar and south of airport road. As far as I know no depot in north ironwood. I worked for BNSF/BNRR from 1981-1995. My grandfather father was WC Soo Line Roadmaster in Mellen Wisconsin from 1900-1932.
Aaron Grace: Sean Kelly not even close! That line actually ran through North Ironwood, and at that time it was still the DSS&A/Soo.

As noted in the description, the depot is still there as a museum, but the railway is long gone.

Aaron Grace As John indicated, the SOO also had a route through town. It paralleled the C&NW on the north side. 1975 Ironwood Quad @ 24,000
