Wilmington, DE: 1822 DuPont Gunpowder Mill and Hagley Museum

E. I. Dupont de Nemours built his first gunpowder mill in 1802. This 1822 mill is the oldest mill still existing. This one was the first one that ground the powder. The earlier mills pounded the powder. The roof and the wall facing the river are gone because they "were of Light flimsy construction. This was done, so that in the event of an explosion there would be no great property damage, the effect being almost that of firing a colossal mortar in the direction where there was the least chance of doing harm....The stone walls are approximately three feet thick and are reinforced with heavy buttresses on the opposite side from the [wood] frame wall."
