link to a GazetteXtra article. The plant was idled in 2008, and GM announced in 2015 that it would permanently close the facility. The article is about the Commercial Development Company being chosen as the buyer. They specialize in redeveloping "brownland." It is still unknown if it would be reused as an industrial space or leveled and redeveloped as residential and commercial property. The environmental remediation plans includes
removing the downstream dam to make it easier to decontaminate the river bed.
GM already did a greenfield move with this plant decades ago. They used to build pickup trucks, but GM built a new plant south of Fort Wayne to make their pickup trucks. I see Janesville got a new lease on life by making SUVs until 2008. I presume there is now a plant in Mexico making the SUVs. Unlike sedans, the SUV
market is still supposed to be strong.
