Mobile, AL: Aerial Veiw

Dennis King shared, 1920s
I include this photo of Mobile, AL in the 1920s because it is another example of how much land railroads used in a city during their heyday. And the ships on the Gulf are interesting. Notice the U-shaped freight house. I wonder if it was an international freight car ferry port back then also.

Close up of above
David Bridges That is actually the M&O terminal in the picture (later the GM&O terminal after the merger, of course). This is perhaps the first picture I've seen of the M&O terminal with the train shed still in place. The GM&N terminal was on the south side of town, so somewhere closer to the top of the picture. Near the top, you can see the Frascati piers that were near the GM&N's Frascati Yard. Very cool picture -- thanks for sharing!

Michael Maitland wow! M&O in the Center, Southern on the left, far left is where the L&N and the Alabama State Docks Terminal squeezed in. The L&N station was along the main street behind the main covered dock area. The GM&N is somewhere out near where the single black toward stands middle back, as David points out.

  1. I believe the long, dark roofed, waterfront warehouse (middle-left of the photo, on the water) is the United Fruit Company's banana dock. It was at the foot of Government Street, and is now the site of the Mobile Convention Center. As for the M&O (now referred to as the GM&O terminal), you can barely make out the dome on the main building...all restored and re-purposed now.
