Westville, IN: Wabash Depot and Grain Elevator

Jason Jordan posted, photo by Mike Albert
Here is the Westville, Indiana station, ca. 1970.
Another reminder that about every town with a railroad had a depot and a grain elevator. In fact, that could be why the town existed. But in this case the town must have already existed because these buildings seem to have been built on the edge of the city. Mike's comment indicates that this location was at the current site of the Westville Farm Supply.

I found a resource of Indiana abandonment filings, which is good because the INDOT map now seems to be broken. Evidently, N&W tried abandoning the line through this town in 1983, but was denied.
(N&W|Gary-East Line|Gary (286.63) to Dillon (203.74)|AB-10(24)|42.89|1983)
The NS must have filed and succeeded in 1989.
(NS|Gary East Line|Pine (186.64) to Wakarusa (170.24)|AB-290(34)|16.4|1989)
At any rate, the line is now gone from the Chicago-area to an industrial (grain elevator) spur west of South Milford. Given that the NS congestion was so bad on the former NYC route that it helped rebuild the CF&E route (old Pennsy mainline) that CSX got rid of, I'll bet NS now regrets tearing up this line across Northern Indiana.

    1. Thanks for the information. I have fixed the posting. If I stare at the photo, I can see a slight angle of the track with the road.

    2. You are welcome. I'm the guy that took this picture btw. The rail was pulled here in 1983 or early 1984.
