Mendota, IL: Milwaukee's Depot

New life for the ex-Milwaukee Road Depot in Mendota, Illinois.

On the Sanborn Map below, you can see that Milwaukee entered town from the south on the west side of the IC RoW. It joined the IC tracks around 3rd St. It then left the IC tracks around 8th St. and briefly followed the CB&Q until it turned north out of town.

In a comment for the Facebook posting referenced by the Union Station blog posting, James explains that Milwaukee's ownership of the track ended where it joined the IC. Since it was not part of the IC track ownership, it was not part of the Union Station ownership. So it built its own depot further south of 3rd St. along its own track to handle freight traffic.

Milwaukee Road 94A and 101A idle away the hours in front of the Mendota, Illinois, station on January 20, 1979. A recent blizzard had trapped the locomotives here for a number of days. Mendota was on the now-abandoned Milwaukee Road branch which ran south from Davis Junction to Ladd. There probably wasn't much call for ice from those two vending machines.
