Paul Petraitis Looks 1860's ish...
James L. Ludwig There is another photograph of the 1853 Union Depot in the hallway inside the Mendota Uniokn Depot Museum.

James L. Ludwig explained that the picture above is of the original Union Depot, which was built in 1853 and burned down in 1885.

It appears the current Union Depot is at least the third one.

Look familiar? It should.
With the peaked roof and dormers removed, that's the current Amtrak depot and museum. Who knew?

John Mann It had a hotel in it. There is an HO model in the train museum in what's left of the station.

Leon Walker: American Express merged with several other express agencies to form railway express.
Ted Richardson: Did the IC and Milwaukee Rd. also use this depot when they had passenger service on their lines through town? The IC freight station is behind the Depot in this view.
Dennis DeBruler: Ted Richardson The IC shared this depot. The Milwaukee depot was here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/ZSz78oVETSKD6WAv9

The box cars peaking between the buildings must be on the CB&Q.

Update: A discussion of freight traffic on the Mendota Subdivision in the comments of a posting. This posting includes a photo of Amtrak and the static display from the other side of the tracks.

One time when I was coming home from McComb, IL, I got off I-80 and took US-34 to I-39 and US-30. I discovered the past railroad town of La Moille and the current railroad town of Mendota. They have a static display of a steam engine and caboose next to a parking lot. Unlike many towns, this display is well maintained.

On display at the Union Depot Railroad Museum in Mendota, Illinois, is Burlington Route class O-1A Mikado No. 4978. The building also houses the Amtrak depot. Though of modest dimensions compared with many other 2-8-2s, the veteran Mikes of class O-1A were among the last steam engines to be operated by the CB&Q. photograph taken on June, 2018. <Richard Leonard`s archives>

Jim Hollis: Former BN CEO Bill Greenwood established this exhibit.

I walked around the display to the track side to get a photo through the security fence. While I was standing here, I caught some failfan action.
In this photo to the right of the display, we see a preserved watchman tower. The two tracks in the foreground are part of the static display tracks for the museums. They are remnants of the IC+Milw tracks.
An overview taken while the train continues to roll past on the right. In the middle is the south side of the depot, and on the left are the two passenger cars that are on static display. (There are pictures of the cars below.)
The depot is now a museum, but it was closed when I was there.
However, you can learn about the railroad history even if the museum is closed. The Aban/IC+Milwaukee crossed the BNSF/CB&Q on the south side of town.
North of the depot, across 8th Street, is another museum and preserved watchman tower.

Note the two commuter cars in the background.
I'm standing on the west side of the depot to get this shot.

This is the other side of that car. Again, some days the sun is not your friend.
This car demonstrates how much work it is to preserve a car.
I noticed that I never took any photos of the museum/depot itself. I think that is because it was so heavily remodeled that it didn't look much like a depot anymore. Fortunately, Streetview allows me to grab a view of the building. The locomotive+caboose static display is on the left. The passenger cars static display is behind the building.

The 1800s architecture of the buildings along Main Street has been well preserved.

While looking for a view of the track side, I discovered that a crossing guard tower is also still standing. I wonder why it is so far from the crossing.
