Saline C: Eldorado, IL: Sahara/O'Gara Coal Mine #10

(Satellite, north of the IC tracks and below Eldorado Street.)

Andy Zukowski posted
O'Gara Coal Mine No. 10 was a major underground coal mine located in the Eldorado Quadrangle of Saline County, Illinois.
The mine was initially developed and operated by the O'Gara Coal Company(1905-31). During this multi-decade run, it produced 6,944,854 tons of coal.
In 1933, operations were taken over by the Sahara Coal Company, which operated it as Sahara No. 10 until its permanent closure in 1941.

The L&N and Big Four had routes through town while the IC had a branch that went to the town. The IC branch served the Dering Mine as well as the O'Gara #10 Mine.

Since the mine operated until 1941, it is in this aerial photo. It is just north of the IC tracks. Also, it looks like Big Four has an industrial spur that comes over to the mine.

To my surprise, it is just the IC branch that still exists.

Millstadt, IL: 1876 GM&O/M&O/Columbia & Millstadt Depot and Wood Feed Mill

Depot: (Satellite, a spur came north on the east side of Breese Street. So, I think it was within a block of Madison and Breese Streets.)

Milstadt, Illinois: Passenger & Freight Station, Mobile & Ohio Railroad. The M&O Passenger & Freight Station at Milstadt, on the very short Milstadt Branch, was estimated as having been built in about 1876. The photograph was taken on 6 June 1916.

Dede Brinkmann: Is the location of the Millstadt food pantry now?
Ruth Ann Saul Mueller: Dede Brinkmann yes [When I searched for the food pantry, Google Maps offered Millstadt Community Center.]

At first the depot up by Madison Street didn't make sense because this map shows that M&O branch went through town on Elm Street and terminated at a strip mine.
1954/59 Quad @ 24,000

After I read the comments by Dede and Ruth, I took a closer look at this map and found the spur that went up along Breese Street to Washington Street. And this map answers why the feed mill was too blocks north of the elevators down by Elm Street. Specifically, it had its own spur off the spur.
1913/13 Waterloo Quad @ 62,500

But I could not reconcile the map with the photo with the food pantry, so I got an old aerial photo. Washington Street is along the top, and Jefferson Street is along the left side. I still can't figure it out, but I think the depot was within a block of Madison and Breese Streets.
1940 Aerial Photo from IHLAP

I had gotten the 1913 map to determine how the Millstadt Branch connected to the M&O. The junction is north of Columbia where the M&O uses a valley to get through the river bluff.
1913/13 Waterloo Quad @ 62,500

While looking for the depot's location, I discovered these old grain elevators.

The mill on the left (west side) and the storage elevator on the right are gone, but the feed mill in the distant background still stands.
Street View, Jul 2013

The feed mill looks like two traditional elevators that were connected.
Street View, Jun 2026

And there was another traditional elevator north of what we see above. And the red brick indicates that there was another building on this side.
Street View, Jun 2026

Photo, Jun 2024

We know it was still operational in 2024 because it is loading a Purina feed truck.

The spur to the depot explains the little smudge near the end of the Millstadt Branch. Today, all of these GM&O and IC routes have been abandoned, not just the Millstadt Branch.

I zoomed out on the aerial photo so that we can see what the strip mine looked like in 1940.

Peoria C: Orchard Mines, IL: Coal Mines

A depiction of historic Orchard Mines, Illinois, showing the railroad line running through the village. The Illinois River is in the background... I have relatives that grew up in that area, and worked in the local coal mines there. I enjoyed hearing stories about life during those times, the trains that came through, and the people, some real characters, surrounding them.
Orchard Mines is an unincorporated area opposite the bridge near Pekin, at the IL St Rt 9 / U.S. Rt. 24 intersection area, somewhat near Mapleton, part of the Hollis Township (T. P. & W. Rail Road area) , which consists of Mapleton, Orchard Mines, Tuscarora, Hollis, LaMarsh.

You can search for an index number in this file to get more information about the indexed mine.

Is Portal #9 the only mine head that is feeding the prep plant?
IronSenergy_facility
"The Cumberland #9 portal is a centralized hub for the operation, which includes the miner’s bathhouse, shaft elevator, training center, and communication within the company. It helps to streamline processes, enhance collaboration, and provide employees with easy access to essential resources."

IronSenergy
"The Prep Plant is a core foundation of our operation, transforming raw coal into a valuable resource. Through our advanced process, the prep plant cleans, sorts, and sizes the coal, ensuring it meets quality standards of our customers. Our Prep Plant facility also contains our raw coal stockpiles, warehouse and clean coal loadout."

IronSenergy_facility
"Once completing the process at the Prep Plant, all of Iron Senergy’s coal is transported 17 miles from the Prep Plant to Alicia Harbor, where it is loaded onto barges along the Monongahela River. This then allows our team to then deliver to customers locally or the ability to offload to our Labelle Facility."

Note that barge traffic between Alicia and LaBelle uses the Maxwell Lock.

IronSenergy_facility
"Also located along the Monongahela River is our LaBelle facility, which provides robust ground storage and the ability to load both Class I railroads. Conveniently located, LaBelle offers access to all east coast export terminals."

IronSenergy_facility
"Iron Senergy also owns and operates our own 17-mile short line railway that transports clean coal from our Preparation Plant in Kirby, PA to Alicia Harbor, located in Alicia, PA.
"As of 2024, the Cumberland Mine Railroad was the longest privately owned railroad in the United States."

Thought you might be interest in a different strip mine machine built by a German company and assembled for the Peabody Coal mine in Braidwood, Illinois.
Rick Degler: We tore it down in 1972 move it to pit 6 from Northern mine.
Pete Craddock: They moved it down to River King mine in 1972 and 73 south of the Randolph prep plant. We called it the Krup wheel. It worked in the same arra as the 3850.
Patrick Dickey: Hitler's revenge is what my father called it!!!!
Guy Kasper: Pete Craddock I was on the construction crew ,, Blue prints were in German and we found parts by pictures up on the hill.. they didn't buy metric bolts to put back together we had to ream holes out to SAE bolts ..
Dave Dvorak: Was assembled and dug at Peabody Coals Great Northern Mine, Braidwood, Il.

Thanks for the "#15" information. O'Gara had a lot of mines in Saline County.
