Columbus, OH: Pennsy+B&O+Big Four Union Stations and Pennsy "High St." Tower

Station: (Satellite, the Union Station was near the southern part of the land now used by the convention center.)
Tower: (Satellite, see Greg's comment below.)

This was the "arcade" along High Street. The station itself was a building behind the south part of the arcade.
ColumbusNavigator
There were three Union Stations at this location: 1851, 1875 and 1897-1977.
"The arcade was unique to Columbus and was sort of the mixed-use building of its time, with stores and offices built atop the viaduct. "

Two of many photos from dispatch:

My father was scanning some old photos from my grandfather's house. He worked for the railroad until retirement. This is a shot he scanned of downtown Columbus, probably from around the 60-70 era. It's interesting because I currently work in the Smith Bros building in the foreground. The railyard is currently where the convention center and the downtown exit from 670 West are.

"By the 1840s, railroads were replacing canals as the primary means of long-distance transportation of people and products. Early trains could travel up to 20 miles per hour, about five times faster than canal boats. Columbus entrepreneur William Dennison chartered the Columbus and Xenia Railroad in 1844."

Regular readers know that I'm a sucker for line-shaft photos.

[Several comments date it as 1950s because of the skyline.]

This tower is named UN because it was near Union Valley Road. [Flickr comment]
The tracks on the left were P&LE and those on the right were B&O. The yard tracks went further south than the topo map indicates. The model board indicates the tower is the building on the west side of the B&O tracks about halfway between Union Valley Road and MacKee Run.

B&O Roundhouse

lcmemoirs, this webpage has a lot of information about the railyard including a photo of the UN Tower.

The B&O roundhouse is in the lower-right corner. The roundhouse in the upper-left corner was the Pennsy roundhouse and the little roundhouse near the upper-right corner was the PL&E. The PL&E roundhouse is extant and now owned by Kasgro Rail Corp.

It cost me hours to find the current location. I saw all sorts of references to it, but nobody included any location information. At least I learned about a bunch of other stuff while I was looking for the current location.

The track in the above photo was a branch of the Pennsy.

That Pennsy branch and the P&LE north of the CSX crossing is now owned by the New Castle Industrial Railroad (NCIR). NCIR helped move the UN Tower to its present location.

Harvey, IL: B&O Depot and Allis-Chalmers Fork Lift and Engine Factory

Depot: (Satellite)
Factory: (Satellite?)

I normally don't bother to note the many commuter stations that used to exist on the Chicago railroads, including the belt lines. But this correction is worth saving.

I am looking for any info or old pics of a depot that used to be in Harvey,Il.,at app. 151st./Broadway st. near Thornton HS.This picture taken in mid 70's or so says it was a GTW depot.I thought the B&O was next to depot w/GTW tracks next to that.Any info would be appreciated. Thank-You.
Bob Lalich The depot in the photo was B&OCT. Here is a 1981 photo taken by Doug Davidson. The GTW is to the left past the pole line and weeds.

Dave Ladislas Sr. If you go on Satellite view and follow the tracks to Blue Island you can see the remnants of all the old factories that used to be there and the spur lines. That was a booming area when I was a kid.We used to ride our bicycles along there to BI all the time.
