This town is located on the B&O branch that ran from Beardstown to Shawneetown, Illinois. The B&O referred to this town as Louis so as to avoid any confusion with Louisville, KY. Very little trace of this line exists here today. Photo taken 5/20/68 by Barry Lennon

It was between Clayton and Mt. Sterling on this 1888 map excerpt. So it was on the branch that needed to use a steam locomotive because diesels were too heavy to use the bridge across the Illinois River. Richard Fiedler: Dennis DeBruler yes, we’re writing about the same line. The ancient iron bridge at Meridosia couldn’t handle even an SW diesel so they kept the moguls alive until the Wabash leased a GE 44 tonner from the Pennsylvania.

Early owner unknown/Huntting Elevator Co. Headhouse built before 1899? 15,000-bushel capacity. Extensively repaired in 1912 after the west wall collapsed causing the house to lean. Annex built in 1917, T. E. Ibberson Co. 15,000-bushel capacity. Metal cladding added to the annex in 1934 by T. E. Ibberson Co. It was also painted silver during this time. The Federal North Iowa Grain Co. was operating from this complex by 1928.

The elevator is skunked by a tree on the left in this view. I included the track because I was surprised how much it goes up and down, that is, an uneven grade.

The B&O also used to serve this town, but it is also gone.

Schopmeyer Ag no longer owns this elevator. They now serve the chemical (including fertilizer) aspect of farming in two other towns. I wonder if this elevator is still being operated. While checking out the Rosedale location, I noticed there are a lot of covered bridges in the area.

Milligan, NE: Wood Kassik Mills

Tin elevator still in use with the wood leg inside along with a new one installed through the roof

Bob Summers: This would be a cribbed construction wood elevator with tin on the exterior to make them less vulnerable to fire, often from embers from the coal fired steam locomotives. We usually call them “iron clad” elevators.

Cribbed construction is where 2x6 planks are laid flat and nailed to the layer below. Takes a lot of lumber.

South of Kassik Milling is the Farmers Cooperative.

Michigan Central Depot Standish Michigan 

A crowd gathers outside the Michigan Central Railroad depot in Standish in this c. 1930s view, with the stone station labeled “Standish” and multiple tracks running past the platform.

The building itself is older than the photo. Histories of the site say the current fieldstone depot was built in 1889 after an earlier wooden depot wore out, with local farmers supplying stones for the walls. Passenger service eventually faded, and the depot later found new life as a community landmark and visitor stop.

Look closely at the people on the platform — this is what “train time” looked like in a small Michigan town.

In this view of the grain elevator, I included the mural. Note the gravity wagon by the elevator. They are also becoming historic.
