Olney, IL: B&O and IC Depots

B&O: (Satellite)
IC: (Satellite)

Kerry Holtz posted two photos with the comment: "The B&O depot in Olney, Illinois."
Robert Karl Bullard: I question that the bottom photo is the B&O in Olney. Possibly the IC in Olney.
Marty White: Robert Karl Bullard you are correct

The B&O depot was probably the rectangle north of the tracks and west of Whittle Ave. In this excerpt, North Street is along the top and Fair Street is along the right side. I think the rectangle that was east of Whittle Ave. and west of Fair Street was the freight house.

I had to include more around the IC depot because the Hurn Lumber Company has changed that area a lot. The track in the city park is a good anchor between then and now. West Street is along the left and Chestnut Street is along the bottom. I think the rectangle in the northeast quadrant of Butler Street and Kitchell Ave. was the IC depot. The buildings that were on the land now occupied by the City Fire Department were probably the grain elevator in the IC depot photo.

[Note the Pennsy positional light signals in this and the following photo. Also because of the buildings in the background the Contrail train is heading geographically South. That put the tower in the southeast quadrant.]

Point Pleasant, WV: B&O Depot

I picked this older view because it had less vegetation in the way.

This is the most recent view.

I've come to think of "activist investor" as a euphemism for robber baron. And this depot is another demonstration that management doesn't like "wasting" money on maintenance. CSX has no pride.

[The stairs and door in this photo is consistent with Tucker's photo above. So back in the B&O days, it had a nice paint job.]

Here is a photo I took in 2015 at about the same location as the one I took in 1967.

Karl Scheich commented on Doug's post about the caboose
Here’s a recent photo from 2020, I worked out of Parkersburg WV as a CSX Carman, we would come here to repair freight cars with our line of road truck.

Doug's reference to NYC tracks made me wonder about what NYC was doing this far south. According to the 2005 SPV Map, it was two NYC subsidiaries. It was Toledo & Ohio Central (TOC) to the West, and the Kanawaha & Michigan (K&M) to the East. The bridge across the Ohio River was owned by both TOC and K&M. The C&O route that TOC joins was the Hocking Valley (HV). And according to the 2005 SPV Map, the NYC route is now owned by NS. (Of course, the C&O/HV and B&O routes are now owned by CSX.)

I've noticed that this map doesn't do a good job of showing a route that is shared by NS and CSX. Today, it is NS that uses the HV route north of Point Pleasant.

The depot was across the river from downtown.

The bridge across the wye and Casselman River was a connection between the B&O and Western Maryland.

It must have been built after 1908 or I think it would show in the photo at the top. This is the oldest topo map I could find, it it already existed.

The B&O route to the south is now owned by IORY. This map shows the IORY terminating at Sullivant Ave. But a satellite map shows the tracks continue north and now join the NS/Pennsy tracks.

B&O Depot, Louisville, Illinois.
Photo of the former B&O Southwestern at the small town of Louisville, Illinois.
This town is located on the B&O branch that ran from Beardstown to Shawneetown, Illinois. The B&O referred to this town as Louis so as to avoid any confusion with Louisville, KY. Very little trace of this line exists here today. Photo taken 5/20/68 by Barry Lennon

The grain elevator on the left is where  the bins in the above photo used to stand.

This is the elevator that is in the right background of the above view.

Given the cross street in Andy's photo, I think it is the rectangle that was south of the tracks and west of Chestnut Street.

Chicora, PA: Lost/B&O/BR&P Depot

(Satellite, the fire station has repurposed the land.)

Stanley Short posted
The abandoned Baltimore & Ohio depot at Chicora, PA on Aug. 24, 1979.
Jason Miller: The train still runs past it daily. It doesn’t stop in Chicora anymore. It has a dedicated run to the oil refinery in Petrolia and Karns City. I am guessing that it was demolished around 1990. The fire department owns the property now.

It was on the B&O's Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh. Specifically, on the route between Butler and Mt. Jewett. On this map, Chicora is between Butler and Karns City.

That route has become an industrial spur to the two petroleum product plants.

Baltimore, MD: 1935-2005 GM/Chevy Assembly Plant

(Satellite)

John Sery posted four images with the comment: "In Chuck McAbee's response to industrialmodel's post about B&O auto parts train 396, he mentioned GM's Baltimore assembly plant. That remined me of a field trip that my Jr. High School shop class took to visit that facility on Broening Highway in 1965. Highlight was seeing the car engines drop down from a second floor to mate with the car chassis below. I still have the booklet from that trip that I have scanned if you are interested! You can see the plant service tracks on the cover photo and the text mentions that approximately 70 railroad cars served the plant daily."

"vehicle production was halted for four years at Broening highway as 'rosie the riveters' built fuselages for U.S. Aircrafts during World war II. Courtesy of GM ARCHIVES"

This area was dominated by Pennsy, but the post was in a B&O group, and it appears that B&O did have a tendril that snaked its way down to this plant.

This is a photo of the B&O station in Nappanee, Indiana. The station was built in 1910 and while not being used these days, the station is still there near the center of town after being restore a few years ago. Nappanee was a station stop for the Capitol Limited and remained a stop for Amtrak for at least 30 years. The Amish buggy parking lot can barely be seen in this photo behind the station.
