Oil City, PA: Aug 1859 Drake and Nov 1861 McClintock #1 Oil Wells

(Satellite)

See History of Oil Production and Crude Oil Products for information about the Drake Well.

I've seen dates for 1859, 1860 and 1861 for the drilling of this well depending on the source.

If you visit the Pennsylvania Oil Region an interesting stop is The McClintock No. 1 Oil Well. It’s located at Waitz Road, Oil City, PA This well holds the record as the world's oldest continuously operating oil well. This oil well has produced continuously since August, 1861. Drilled only two years after the famous Drake Well. They struck oil at a depth of 620 feet. It started strong at 175 barrels a day in 1861. By 1869, output had slowed to roughly 85 barrels a day. By 1920, it was classified as a "stripper well," yielding just half a barrel of oil per day. In 1995, Quaker State donated the historic site to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Today, it is managed by the nearby Drake Well Museum. It is still pumped periodically to maintain its continuous operational status, producing roughly 50 gallons annually.
