South Charleston, OH: Junction Tower: Pennsy vs DT&I and Trailhead/DT&I Depot

Tower: (Satellite, the topo map implies the northeast quadrant and that is consistent with the photos if the Pennsy was double tracked and the DT&I was single tracked.)
Depot: (Satellite)

The yellow building on the right was a depot and the cabooses are setting on a remnant of the DT&I. The tower was out-of-frame to the left. This "history park" is now the trailhead for the Prairie Grass and Ohio to Erie Trails. Both of these trails use the connector and Pennsy route west of the junction.

The PRR C&X line was torn up in 1988 to the west and torn up between here & London, OH in 1993.
The DT&I is now part of the Indiana & Ohio Railway plus a rebuilt section of the PRR to service Sunrise Cooperative at both of their grain elevators.

If you are here because of "Lima, OH: Lost/Sugar Street Junction Tower: Pennsy vs. DT&I," then you need to go there.

The 2005 SPV Map indicates it was at the north end of the curve. This map shows that would have been by Eureka Street.

It is extant, https://maps.app.goo.gl/EtaCZRxbCNbJ1wB4A.

It is interesting that DT&I had a bypass around the town.

I couldn't find any "repair facilities" in the obvious DT&I yard west of Chillicothe Street. But this aerial photo shows some obvious repair facilities over by the B&O tracks. According to the 2005 SPV Map, DT&I and B&O shared the tracks to the southeast, so that must be how DT&I accessed this facility.

The backshop buildings and roundhouse are extant, but Google Maps doesn't label who owns them.

Obviously, someone is using them.

This behind the old General Mills
Doug Tagsold: Former DT&I yard Howie Castellucio: The DT&I Temperance yard. It's original layout had 32 tracks. With the abandonment of the original main line in the early 60s. I'm not sure of when tracks were removed or even if the DT&I ever built the yard completely. Lukas Irons: looks like a transload for what customer? David Jordan: Lukas Irons I'd guess car storage here. General Mills is now Hometown Food. I don't know if animal fat is still transloaded near W. Laskey Road or the "auto shredder residue" (ASR) is still loaded near the GM plant.

It appears that just the corporate name has changed, they still make Pillsbury and other brands. [HometownFoodCompany]

This would have been the interchange yard between DT&I and the Toledo Terminal Railroad. The DT&I is abandoned north of the GM plant. (And it looks like the GM plant no longer has rail service.) The TT is now owned by CSX, and it is abandoned west of this yard.

Another one to cool you off this morning, caught on a morning coffee run after an overnight snow storm. The old Grand Trunk station at Lapeer has seen many beautiful winter mornings like this in its 123 year history.

Dennis DeBruler posted two street views with the comment: "Lapeer, MI, preserved their depot and some cabooses. (The GT is privately owned, but shared with the public.) And Amtrak uses the preserved depot. The Grand Trunk ran east/west through town and the Michigan Central went north/south. And the Detroit, Toledo & Ironton was in southeast Michigan."

The Michigan Central went north/south through town just east of the depot. CN uses a remnant of the southern spoke as an industrial spur to Delta Faucet Company. In a satellite image, I saw three covered hoppers spotted next to the plant. They are probably carrying plastic pellets.

This is probably a feed mill. Note the little locomotive on the left side. And the circular foundation for an abandoned grain bin.

Looking past that bin foundation, we can see the locomotive.

Night shift at Lapeer
While scanning negatives this morning, I came across this companion shot to another (seen here: www.flickr.com/photos/20517853@N06/46365299225/in/datepos... )view of the tower at Lapeer Jct. MI (GTW-NYC) looking west, the opposite direction as one I had posted previously. Taken in Feb. 1979, a few months before the tower closed forever. This negative became separated from the others that I took on that particular night when I had it out printing it for someone years ago. Anyway, the photo looks west towards the railroad control point "East Lapeer", the East end of the CTC siding at Lapeer on the GTW Flint Sub. You can make out the absolute signal in the distance well as the overhead signal just east of Court Street which protected eastward trains through the interlocking. It was a bitter, snowy night to be out shooting but I'd pay good money to be able to reshoot it in 2019.

The diamond and tower were located at Mile 290.0 (From Chicago) of the Flint Sub. and Mile D59.8 (From Detroit) of the PC Mackinaw branch. Telegraphic call sign for Lapeer Jct. was "G". Taken with a Yashica Mat 124G using Kodak Tri-X pan 120 film.
