Only tower i had to hoop up 19 orders, for the sand train against the grain and when we diverted psgr trains on the Amboy branch around the Wreck in Lincoln interlocking.
Jerry Gorla: Philip Donnelly I held the nites there for awhile back in my Operator days. I also remember working "SA" on the NY&LB when a ship hit the Raritan Drawbridge & I had to issue orders for.
I copied orders for the MUs to run that line over to Midway so they could get them running over to Wood where they were busing commuters to.

I included the substation behind it. It takes a lot of electricity to power the NEC locomotives.

I first got a 1967 topo map, but the railroads were labelled N&W. Then I remembered that N&W bought the Virginian, so I got this older map.

This article describes a 1922 expansion in extensive technical detail. I enlarged the pic of the GE 1,800 hp motor. Plant capacity grew to 120,000 tons of cold rolled, galvanized,  and blue annealed sheets up to 60 inches wide."

Western Electric Corporation Plant in East Pittsburgh, Allegheny County in the 1950's. This view is from the Westinghouse Bridge on Route 30, East of Pittsburgh. The Plant employs over 15,000 people, engaged in the manufacture of heavy electrical equipment such as big electric turbine generators. In addition to other achievements, this plant has produced the world's largest electric motors.
Ray Wuslich: Western electric was in East Liberty. All ATT and Bell Telephone equipment was manufactured there. This is Westinghouse Electrics East Pittsburgh plant.
Joseph Bailey: Ray Wuslich Yeah it was...right there at the corner of Penn Avenue and Washington Blvd. But I don't think they made their equipment there just refurbish phones and other equipment.
Ron Walko: No such thing as an electric turbine generators. Westinghouse produced the generators and exciters for large steam turbines . Erroneous information all around.
Westinghouse’s large steam turbine’s were manufactured by their Steam Turbine Division in Philadelphia.
[I've seen a lot of posts from "Jackson-Township historical preservation," and this is the first time I've seen such significant errors in a description from that outfit. Talk about a bad day. Some comments basically said it is not AI because AI is not that stupid. I don't understand why humans are not correcting the description.]

The plant was just Northeast of the George Westinghouse Bridge.

Michael Andrew Odorisio: Trafford Park is in the UK, not Allegheny County. Westinghouse had identical office buildings in East Pittsburgh and Trafford Park. Interesting enough for that fact, though.

Here is to my grandma's former employer, Westinghouse East Pittsburgh.  Prior to 1973 many a large horsepower mill motors were supplied from this location  Today this work is done by Teco Westinghouse in Round Rock, TX.

Linda Hudson: We used to load MPC units (tanks) that went to nuclear power plants out of there Holtec ...the power plants put the nuclear waste in them.

Jennifer Onaitis Legler: After World War II, my dad worked there that was when they created generators for large electrical generating dams. They were so big you could walk through them. We would see them on family day. They were called LRA or large rotating apparatus.

View of the Westinghouse Air Brake Works in Wilmerding, Allegheny County in 1891. In 1890, George Westinghouse built a plant at Wilmerding, thirteen miles east of Pittsburgh along the Pennsylvania Railroad's Philadelphia-Pittsburgh main line. Soon, the Wilmerding plant sprawled across thirty acres. By 1905, it employed about 3,000 workers who produced 1,000 sets of brakes every day. William Rau took this photograph of the Westinghouse Air-brake works plant in 1891.

The current day Wabtec (Westinghouse Air Brake Technologies) plant in Wilmerding, Pennsylvania.  
Wilmerding was one of the countries first planned towns as it was established to house workers after George Westinghouse moved his Air Brake plant to the area in 1889.  
Late last year I heard the announcement the plant was set to close by July (it may have already as I haven't heard update), and have been meaning to get back out there since I read the announcement.    I've photographed the historic Machine Shop before (far left), but the last time I was in Wilmerding a few years ago, the General Office Building "Westinghouse Castle' was under construction and couldn't get a photo of it without the scaffolding etc.  I'll hopefully get to those photos soon, and might even go again to redo one angle that I know didn't come out how I wanted.  
Out of all of the "Captains of Industry' of that age, George Westinghouse is one of my favorites the more I read about him.  He was a pioneer in many fields, and generally treated his workers well by all accounts.

Google Maps offered this as the signature photo for the town. I presume that is a likeness of George Westinghouse on the sign.

Plant workers at a rally for full production at the Westinghouse plant located in East Pittsburgh, Allegheny County in 1944. With close to 125,000 workers at the height of the war, the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Co. in Pittsburgh was one of the state's largest and most innovative companies. Boasting that it manufactured more that 100,000 products, Westinghouse produced everything from gun mounts to electric power plants for aircraft carriers powerful enough to light a city of 250,000 people. Contributions by engineers in Westinghouse's fabled Research Laboratories included critical breakthroughs in plastics, radar, x-rays, bombsights, and atomic energy. Schenectady, NY: GE Power Generation and Research & Development

That sign makes me feel nostalgic. When I lived in Fort Wayne, IN, in the 1950s and 60s, GE was still there. And there was a comparable sign that had a lot of lightbulbs.

GE was founded in 1892 by merging Edison General Electric and Thomson-Houston Electric. The first sign for this plant faced the NYC tracks. Additional signs were added to buildings along the tracks. Today's sign was built in 1926 in recognition of the "growing use of the automobile and the newly constructed Erie Boulevard and Western Gateway Bridge....The 168-foot-long sign with 36-foot diameter monogram is comprised of 1399 25-watt incandescent bulbs." It takes about 24 man-hours to change the normal clear bulbs to colored bulbs such as red and green for December and red, white and blue for special events.

On April 15, 1892, General Electric Company was formed by the merger of Thomas Edison's General Electric Company with Thomson-Houston Electric Company. The deal was arranged by J. P. Morgan and incorporated in NY with the Schenectady plant used as headquarters for many years thereafter. Around the same time, General Electric's Canadian counterpart, Canadian General Electric, was formed.

Ken Gay: Tim Treacy Sadly true. Cleanup of river bottom not feasible. So, letting it silt over is the only plan. Seems like the Striped Bass have been doing good.
Bob Johnson: Ken Gay not sure that's how it went... one spot up river was ordered to be dredged about 20 years ago...thus spewing tons of PCBs back into the water system that had settle deep in the bottom of the river.... I always wonder if that wasn't what caused the canvasbacks to stop using the river.... their departure seems to happen about the same time

Wayne Karberg posted three photos with the comment: "The origin of many, many powerful machines, Building 273, GE, Schenectady,NY.  When I worked there, you could not see to the end of the high bay due to all the fumes from machining.  A REALLY impressive operation.  Lunch in the Italian neighborhood just outside the subway entrance (south side) was a real treat!  Anyone remember the onion rings at the place in Scotia across the Mohawk River??"
Travis Dixon: Not directly related but the company I work for used to forge a TON of turbine blades and nozzles for GE Turbofans. Most have now been sourced to Wuxi in China.

That would be a rotor for a generator. This closeup answers a question that has been on my mind: how do they fasten the generator to the turbine. It confirms that the shaft is made with a huge flange that has a lot of big bolt holes. The shaft in an 800mw unit is transferring over a million horsepower!

Bruce Berman: I doubt if this photo was taken at the utility. My guess is it was shot at either GE in Schenectady, NY; Westinghouse in Pittsburgh; or Allis-Chalmers in Milwaukee. They were the only manufacturers in the U.S. at the time of large turbine-generators for the electric power utility market.
Ben Hess: Bruce Berman you are correct. I can confirm this is the Schenectady location. This is E bay.
[Several comments debate whether they are cutting metal or measuring ("truth check"). Evidently the safety rules have changed as to weather or not an operator can be that close to the turbine if they are cutting metal.]
Mikeys Millworks: I'm a little surprised there are no mid supports (steady rest).
Ben Hess: Mikeys Millworks zoom in and you will see a steady rest in-between body and the first smaller fan ring. It’s an older style than anything similar to a hydro that we use now. Two brass pucks that it slides on with the aid of grease. This doesn’t have steady rests past that because there are more features behind what you see that put the center of gravity closer to where the machinist is working. In addition, if this is a 3rd lathe (likely), everything is ready except for a few finishing ops. They have what’s called clam-shells installed to protect the bearing surfaces they are riding on right now, and don’t want to set up anything on a finished surface that could potentially damage it

But Thomas Edison was fired because of his continued insistence on using DC. Westinghouse and Tesla had won the "current wars" and established multi-phase AC as the way to go. GE hired Charles Proteus Steinmetz to be their "resident genus" comparable to Tesla. Steinmetz created the precursor to the first corporate research lab in 1910. [Video] (At 25:25, Kathy tells the $10,000-bill Steinmetz story. I remember the essence  of the story ("Making chalk mark on generator $1. Knowing where to make mark $9,999"), but I had forgotten that it was a Westinghouse generator at a Ford plant that he had fixed.)

This is obviously an older plant layout. What caught my eye was the Erie Canal along the north side of the plant. I know that rather big pleasure boats can still travel between Lake Erie and the Hudson River. Did they channelize the Mohawk River with locks and dams or did they dig a new canal?

Robert Lozier: Mr. Picky-picky here.... The horn speaker is either a UZ-1320 or UZ-1325. The UZ-1320 was announced in August 1923. Then the 1325 in 1924.

Modern high-power transmitters still require vacuum tubes, primarily because they are robust and highly efficient at generating very high RF power levels that are difficult or uneconomical to achieve with solid-state components. Along with regular vacuum tubes, there's also microwave cavity magnetrons, klystrons and travelling waves tubes (TWTs).
Shown below is the ceramic/metal Eimac 4CM500,000G a 0.5 megawatt MW/SW broadcast power tetrode tube that uses multiphase-cooling (water/vapor) and a thoriated tungsten mesh filament with pyrolytic graphite grids which provide high-dissipation combined with low secondary emission characteristics.

This article talks about employment figures by GE in Schenectady in 1917 (20,000), 1994 (8,000) and today (2,000 at GE Power and 2,000 at Global Research Center).
The above referenced DailyGazette guesses today's number is 3,000 because GE won't provide a number. The WWII peak was 45,000, and it settled back down to 32,000 in 1952. In the 60s and 70 it was around the mid-20,000s.

Jun 2026. I'm glad to read that it will be reinstalled after an upgrade. I think Fort Wayne lost it sign a long time ago.
