Layton, PA: B&O (NS) Tower

(Satellite, someplace on the north side of the river where the tracks are close to the river.)

Darren Reynolds posted three photos with the comment: "B&Os 'NS' tower... Layton, Pennsylvania."
1
" NS" tower was only part time as needed for track work.
It had a mechanical interlocking machine June 1979

And yet there were no traces of the signaling pipelines less than a year later.

North Yard Tower

Mark Hinsdale posted
In December, 1973, a southbound quartet of locomotives run "light" (without any revenue traffic being hauled) past North Yard Tower on Penn Central's Mackinaw Branch in Detroit, Michigan.  At North Yard Tower, the operator controls the northern access to North Yard, itself, along with the Detroit Terminal crossing in front of the tower.  My speculation is that this power has moved south from Sterling Yard to North Yard in preparation to take a train back to Sterling, about ten miles to the north. A Peter Dudley commented on Nolan's question
I believe North Yard Tower stood at about the same latitude as Detroit's Luce Avenue. Some signal cabinets mark the spot where the sharply angled Detroit Terminal diamonds once were (Google satellite view).

I worked that tower many times.

Union station was in the southern quadrant of the crossing. Pennsy was on the east side and Erie was on the north side.

I got the railroad names from this map and noticed that the B&O Station was a little west of Mulberry Street.

A long westbound Conrail manifest train bangs across the former Erie Lackawanna main line at Mansfield, Ohio on a hot July, 1978 day. Mansfield was once a very busy railroad and industrial town, with two key New York to Chicago routes and two other secondary branch lines serving the city.  Today, this ex Pennsylvania Railroad artery and one short line are all that remain, and the both of them together see only a handful of daily movements. Like many other so called Midwest "Rust Belt" cities, Mansfield has suffered the loss of much of its industrial base over the years, and with it, the loss of rail traffic that once moved through here.  July, 1978 photo by Mark Hinsdale

Maxwell Crosby: The Bremen depot is cool. It was moved to the outskirts of town by US-6 and a nice display is now there. Very unique styling

Mark Hinsdale commented on Maxwell's comment
Yes, they did a nice job. Here was my last picture of it in its original location, before the move you referenced.

Dennis DeBruler commented on Maxwell's comment, [AR1VKY000010094]
Is it still by US-6? I looked along that road on a satellite map, but I could not find it. I believe this was the original location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/WAJHkg6RijHS8RmdA. 1956 aerial photo
Maxwell Crosby: Dennis DeBruler ok I was kinda off. It’s in the fork in the road at Douglas Rd and Destiny Drive just off 6, just south of the Bremen Animal Clinic. You can see it from US-6 if you know when to look.

Dennis DeBruler commented on Maxwell's comment
Thanks. I see they also preserved a CPL signal. https://maps.app.goo.gl/mrUMP6C3Ume94xsb6. This depot caught my eye because it looks more like an East Coast depot than a Midwest depot.
Maxwell Crosby: Dennis DeBruler it’s eye catching to me because of just how unique looking it is. Almost looks more like an older home then a depot, especially when you look at nearby Nappanee.
It must’ve made quite a statement for those that called on it back in the B&O days

I wonder what industry in 1956 had the rail service that is now used by a grain elevator.

There used to be some concrete silos here as well.
Street View, Oct 2008

The elevator has a rather long fall protector.
Satellite

Is this their locomotive? They would need one because I'm sure CSX would not do the switching that is needed to load a unit train here.
Satellite

At the east end of the long siding is a pocket track. So, the elevator could park their locomotive here and after CSX leaves a train on the siding, the elevator's locomotive can load the train. There is about a mile between here and the other end of the siding near Center Street, so it can hold a unit train. And Douglas Road has an underpass so a bunch of hopper cars on the siding won't impact local traffic.
Satellite

While looking for the current location of the depot, I found another elevator in this town.
Satellite

Some of the bins in that elevator are pretty big.
