Hamtramck is in the lower-left corner of this excerpt. According to the 2004 SPV Map, yellow was the GTW East Yard, dark blue was the MC East Yard and light blue was the MC North Yard.

CN East Yard on the left, and CRSA East Yard on the right. Most of the tracks have been removed from the CN yard. The track ladder in Charles' photo would have been on the left side of this view.

In December, 1973, a southbound quartet of locomotives run "light" (without any revenue traffic being hauled) past North Yard Tower on Penn Central's Mackinaw Branch in Detroit, Michigan. At North Yard Tower, the operator controls the northern access to North Yard, itself, along with the Detroit Terminal crossing in front of the tower. My speculation is that this power has moved south from Sterling Yard to North Yard in preparation to take a train back to Sterling, about ten miles to the north. December, 1973 photo by Mark Hinsdale

I believe North Yard Tower stood at about the same latitude as Detroit's Luce Avenue. Some signal cabinets mark the spot where the sharply angled Detroit Terminal diamonds once were (Google satellite view). |
