Mobridge, SD: Milwaukee Railyard with Coaling & Water Towers, Roundhouses, Depot and Grain Elevators

(Satellite, most everything is gone.)

The coaling and water towers and grain elevator are obvious. According to the topo map below, the building behind the water tower is a roundhouse. It also looks like the building in the left background might be a roundhouse. Judging from the boxcars, this photo was from the era when locomotives were getting bigger and roundhouses were getting replaced. Of those buildings that are this side of the grain elevator, one of them was probably the depot.

Somphan Adams: When was the last time you saw a picture of a yard with wooden box cars..? Wow. And you can see the brakeman’s wheel on the ends of a lot of them….WOW…..
[And all of the boxcars had running boards, and most of the cars are boxcars. Also note the track for storing cabooses.]
