Springfield, MA: 1889+1925 Union Station

(Satellite)

Street View, Jun 2024

Lost New England posted
Union Station in Springfield, Massachusetts, as shown in an early 20th century postcard and in 2024. The station building in the top photo was built in 1889, but it was only in use for a few decades before it became too small for the city’s needs. It was demolished in 1925, and it was replaced by the modern-day Union Station, which is mostly located out of view on the left side of the tracks. Among other things, the new station had more tracks and platforms, to accommodate more trains.
Union Station recently reopened after sitting vacant for many years, and it now serves as the northern terminus of the Hartford Line commuter rail line. It is still undergoing further work, with the ultimate goal of making it part of an east-west rail line that would connect Springfield to Boston with regular daily passenger service.

NYNH&H engine service facilities were down by the river, and B&A engine service facilities were across the river.

This station is also a bus terminal.
