Clinton, IA: C&NW Coaling Tower with profile view of the skip hoist

This view shows the bucket going up the skip hoist as opposed to a view in Fort Wayne that shows the bucket being dumped at the top. Judging from the roofline of the building on the right, Clinton had a backshop.

Looking at 1937 and 1951 historical aerial photos, the land between the tracks and Lincoln Highway was for engine service and backshops. Liberty Avenue has been added rather recently. I assume it and Lincoln Highway are now one-way streets. Clinton had a 360-degree roundhouse.

You can still see some remnants of the stalls that were on the south side of the roundhouse. If you draw a line extending 15th Avenue to the yards, the coaling tower was just east of that line where additional yard tracks have now been added.

I was amazed to learn that until as recently as 2002 there were a lot of homes west of South 4th Street that were torn down to make room for industry along the river.
