Marion, OH: AC Tower: CSX/HV and NS/Pennsy vs. CSX/Erie and CSX/Big Four

The tower and interlocak was owned and operated by the Erie Railroad, the NYC Big 4 route ran parallel to the Erie at this location. At one time the tower was painted what the Erie called "Ugly Red".

(Update: an Aug 30, 2016 video from inside the tower. A Sep 4, 2016 video that is an overview of the depot and tower. Several trains were switching moves including a Conrail/NYC shoving platform (formally a caboose).)

James Kehn That is Marion AC Tower before it was rebuilt in the 1950s. Many of the windows were eliminated to what they are today.

Marion used to be a nine-spoke town. Seven of those spokes are still in use. Hawking Valley and Pennsy ran north/south through town with the Pennsy east of the HV. The Erie and Big Four ran east/west through town with the Erie north of the Big Four. And Erie had a branch that went to the southwest to Green Camp.

The HV is now owned by CSX and the Penn is owned by NS. The Erie to the west is abandoned past the yard on the west side of town, but it seems to be owned by CSX. CSX owns Erie to the east and owns Big Four in both directions. CSX seems to use the combination of Erie and Big Four RoWs on the east side as a double track past some industrial areas. CSX then abandons the Erie RoW before Marion-Williamsport Road. The Erie branch to the southwest is abandoned.

[It is so nice when a railfan catches a train but does not let it obscure the tower because it makes it a lot easier to sort out the tower's orientation. The CSX and Seaboard System engines would be heading south on the CSX/HV route. The NS/Pennsy route is in the foreground. ]

Kenny Wilkerson Good ol AC Tower is still looking good, although moved across the track and one floor shorter.

This tower is east of the preserved Union Station as part of a little museum because there is also a static display of a caboose.

Here's a shot of NS train 776 passing through Marion earlier today with Winnie The Pooh on the point of the Norfolk Southern heritage unit.

The classic Erie tower in Marion Ohio still stands today along with a Erie caboose sometimes used in wedding's .But Erie Man that worked the Erie Marion tower still come by Like Bill Haines Keith Robbins and Pet White all worked for the Erie at this tower.

Lance Erickson They balanced power on passenger trains.. Because compared to freight they flew over the road.Ran it back on freight with a slow order on them. Later ran them on freight all the time.

Erie Lackawanna 2569 Westbound at Marion, OH on March 24, 1973 - GP35-F3B-U36C - Marion was a wonderful place to railfan pre-Conrail with EL-PC-C&O-N&W all passing the station.
[You can see the tower above the last locomotive. Not often do you see an old cab B-Unit stuffed between a couple of Geeps.]

A rather rare sight.... Conrail running long-hood forward and westbound past AC Tower at Marion, Ohio in the mid-1980's.
Today this line (former Erie) is now part of CSX and still very busy....AC Tower has been moved and restored across the tracks (screen right) next to the restored Marion Union Station. (Kodachrome 64 slide)

[Some comments indicated that CSX installed OWLS at Deshler and Fostoria and is replacing them. Evidently, CSX was too stupid to realize that flange bearing diamonds are for crossings where one of the routes is hardly used.]
