Semaphores @ "HM"
Baltimore & Ohio's eastbound "Baltimorean" (BALN) blows through Hamler OH on a sunny, unseasonably warm March, 1979 morning. "HM" Tower guarded the crossing of B&O's Akron-Chicago Main Line with the north-south Detroit, Toledo & Ironton. At the time, I remember wishing the second unit, in recently delivered Chessie paint, would have been leading, as new power was about the only way to capture a clean locomotive back in the late 1970's. Raymond Shields: Spent a lot of time in that tower when I was the road foreman out of Willard and Garrett.
Tony Dannemiller: Raymond Shields what was the 3rd row smaller bladed semaphore signal for?
C.G. Tower: Tony Dannemiller you need to learn your rules… bottom semaphore would allow for as slow approach slow or restricting. In this case, just restricting into the sidings that were on either side of the diamonds.
Tony Dannemiller: C.G. Tower my rules from the 1970s? I'll get right on that one.

In the 1980s, the railroad landscape was still populated by many interlocking towers. These towers were beloved by rail photographers and historians. They hearkened back to the steam era and provided those interested a glimpse of what it took to move trains safely and efficiently in the era before computerized Centralized Traffic Control, operated by dispatchers that often were hundreds of miles away in another State.
One such spot I liked to stop at when in the area was the sturdy brick tower along the B&O main line at tiny Hamler, Ohio. Here, the East-West B&O main crosses the DT&I main line on its North-South route between Detroit and Cincinnati. A stop at Hamler always meant that you'd see some action on the railroad and soak up some great railroad atmosphere in the tower. Although I never got to see steam in action at "HM" tower, I always thought that if a passenger train were to appear with one of the B&O's vaunted Pacific's on the point, it would look right in place at Hamler.

B Tupper Upham: Love the orders ready to hand up, leaning against the hotbox detector.

Another small two-railroad town that still has both railroads. But the DT&I is now operated by the shortline Indiana & Ohio Railway. The IORY customers probably get better rail service than the ones on the B&O who are now stuck with CSX.

Because of the semaphores in the photo below compared to the semaphores in the background of the above photo, the train above would be a southbound DT&I train.

Judging from the concrete grain silos, we are looking west along the B&O. The elevator has added a lot of steel bins since then.

This confirms that the tower was in the northeast quadrant.

"New Scenery"
Let's finish up the weekend that marked Amtrak's Golden Anniversary with one more view of the nation's intercity passenger carrier. Like any large railroad, line interruptions are an unfortunate reality, and when derailments or extensive maintenance programs interfere with Amtrak operations, detours are often the end result. In this instance, eastbound Amtrak Train #50, the "Cardinal" blasts over the Detroit, Toledo & Ironton at "HM" Tower in Hamler OH on the Baltimore & Ohio main line, instead of using its normal route, the Chesapeake & Ohio "Straight Line" between Chicago and Cincinnati. With a line blocking derailment on Train #50's regular route, and both it and this B&O line under the jurisdiction of Chessie System, this alternate route to Cincinnati, via the B&O through Deshler OH, Lima OH and Dayton OH will be traversed without too much major damage to the train's schedule, or worse, having to cancel the run altogether. Any rail enthusiasts aboard the train today will undoubtedly enjoy the new scenery of a different route out their window... February, 1979 photo by Mark Hinsdale

Gary Moore: Larry Candilas spent many hours keeping that pipeline clear in winter, and the switches.
Larry Candilas: Gary Moore were you working there when it became single track and then later double track again.
Gary Moore: Larry Candilas yes, I had the crew at Standley when we cut track and swung it over to the new power switch. Didn't get in on the replacement of double track.

It was a cold March 1, 1986, when I took these photos and I stayed only long enough to photograph a southbound GTW train on the old DT&I with one of my favorite SD40's (5917) making a delivery of new Detroit built autos to the Chessie interchange, then hastily departing town after receiving his clearance and train orders. Next up was a fast westbound with C&O 4281 really cracking the DT&I diamond. After a few interior shots of the interlocking machine, it was off to explore the Deshler and Leipsic area. Good times šŸ™‚

Andy Hughes: While 86 is a ways back, it was certainly in the newly computerized CTC era. CTC was in its primitive form in the late 20s. Computers came in well after huge stretches of CTC were cut in. There was always a long drawn out transition period with exceptions. Operators controlled CTC islands under supervision. Or dispatchers slowly controlled more & more. It was slow because it was so expensive. My outfit the Milw Rd was slow because it didn’t have the $ of course. I dreamed of working for RRs such as ATSF where quantum leaps occurred thru the years. Even the B&O had some large CTC programs I believe.
