Marion, OH: NS/PRR Coaling Tower

(see below for satellite info)

Note that this tower still has it metal stairwells. But the skiphoist has been removed.

Since Bing maps are a little old, I also checked Google Map to verify that it is probably still standing.

Michael Douglas: Not all of that structure is there. How did coal get up into the big bin?

Probably a skip hoist,
(Scroll down about half way for coaling towers instead of blast furnaces.)
That square rectangle of concrete down by the middle leg on the right is probably where the hoist went underground to get under the hoppers that would be parked between the two walls further to the right.
I used Google Earth to look at several satellite images. But they either got the northwest side of the tower or it was blurry. Apr 2006 is the best image of the hoist foundation that I could find.

I presume that is the C&NW tower in Dekalb, IL.
I wondered how the buckets on a chain worked.
Again, the metal has been stripped except for the stairs.

NS 8102, the Pennsylvania Railroad Heritage Unit, passes under the PRR old coaling dock on the NS Sandusky District just north of Marion, Ohio as NS 4386 brings a train of empty coal hoppers eastbound.
I have been waiting to get a shot of the Pennsy passing under coaling dock which bates back to the days when this line was known as the Sandusky Branch as was owned by the PRR.
I find it ironic that 8102 met a train of empty coal hoppers heading the other way. Back in the days of when the PRR ran the line, a lot of coal went north to the coal docks in Sandusky.

B Tupper Upham: Very nice. “Harvey” was the name of the coal dock.

This image taught me that I could get Street Views of the tower. I've added one at the top of these notes. It also shows that it still has its metal stairwells.
