While researching
a depot in Robinson, IL, I noticed an industrial area that was the size of about half the town. The west third of that area is a Marathon Refinery. I've seen refineries before. But
an industry with a large tank farm warranted some research. It is a
Rain CII plant. They produce "calcined petroleum coke (CPC)." It turns out the heart of the plant is a couple of rotary kilns like we have seen in
cement manufacturing. CPC is used in the carbon rod electrodes used in electric-arc furnaces to melt steel and in aluminum smelter anode applications. However, geographic size is not everything, the Robinson plant employs about 30 people.
