Chicago & North Western Historical Society posted Moingona, Iowa. The place became famous when Kate Shelley left the station in a massive rain storm to stop the express from a wreck at a washout. This was on the Clinton to Council Bluffs main line before the noted "Kate Shelley" bridge was built as a cut off from the curving heavy grade line through Moingona. Kate was rewarded by being appointed as the agent in Moingona. This is an undated C&NW company photo. Mike Bartels: Moingona depots burned in 1901, 1903 and 1910. The Des Moines Tribune of Sept. 24, 1928, said effective Sept. 24th Moingona had been abolished as a station on the C&NW and no freight would be accepted for shipment to or from there. Track was removed in 1933. The Boone rail museum had a live/online program on the Moingona line earlier this year. Apparently, the last depot no longer exists. https://www.newspapers.com/.../des-moines.../141468802/ |
This topo map shows how the old route went down one creek valley and then back up another creek valley. The
2009 bluff-to-bluff bridge in the cutoff route is named the Kate Shelley High Bridge.
