Hillview, IL: Grain Elevator and Rock Loading for Dec 2, 1982, Flood Repair

(Satellite)

The grain elevator has grown since the wood elevator and two jump-form silos in Barbara's photo below. Note the tamper parked on a side on the right side of this view.

See the GM&O Lift Bridge over the Illinois River for some photos of the flood waters.

Barbara Donovan posted 11 photos with the comment: "December 2, 1982 the railroad track washed out between Roodhouse and Whitehall. They hauled in rock to the Hillview Community Elevator and loaded it onto train cars to make repairs. My dad rode the train up to the washout to watch Pete Wooldridge on the dozer."

[The ICG merger happened in 1970 so that is why we have IC power on GM&O tracks.]

They had to haul the rock East and then South.

There is no loadout equipment, so the elevator is not railserved even though there is a siding in this town.

I don't know why we can't see the tamper in the above view. Here is another view that confirms the siding is now used to park MoW equipment.
