Minor bearing fire today on an auger at the elevator in Garrison, Nebraska. The smell of burning rubber was pretty strong for a while. The David City Volunteer Fire Department called in trucks from David City and Bellwood for assistance, but the fire was small enough to be put out with a single truck. It burned for about 45-55 minutes, and luckily no one was hurt and there wasn't an explosion.

Richard Miller Last time I was at the Garrison location they only had one steel tank.. It was part of the Frontier Coop at that time!! Another good memory!!

Richard Koenig Yes, the tower is just north of 8th street, between Plum and Beech (if you look at Google Maps, you can see it as it was saved and is part of the Wabash Valley Railroad Museum.

Haley Tower June 2019. The tower was moved from its original location which was about 500 feet north of where it sits now. CSX runs along the east side of the property.

Here is a Conrail eastbound manifest passing Haley Tower in Terre Haute IN back in March, 1987. Haley protected the crossing of Conrail's St Louis Line with the CSX CED Subdivision, the former Chicago & Eastern Illinois route between Chicago and Evansville IN. Ludington, MI: River Flooding

They need to widen and/or deepen the Ludington Channel. Evidently, a flooded Pere Marquette River can deliver more water to Pere Marquette Lake than the channel can drain to Lake Michigan. A few rain storms is not going to raise the level of Lake Michigan.

(Update: the town officials built a park by the lake that got destroyed by a storm. Many community members warned them that they were wasting their taxpayer money.)

A high level for the Pere Marquette Lake must make a strong flow through the channel. I wonder how that impacts the ferry service across Lake Michigan.

Sunset arrival of Northbound CSX Q512-01 at Howell Yard, Evansville, IN

They say what you do on the first day of the New Year you'll continue to do till the next New Year and so of course I spent the day chasing trains around the Evansville, Indiana area.

Here we find the crew on CSX Q512 as they pull to a stop at the north end of CSX Howell Yard in Evansville as they prepare to conduct a crew change before heading on north, as dusk falls over the yard on New Years day, January 1st, 2021.

I learned of the overpass for the above view from a comment by Brian Du Bois on a post: "Howell Yard is Southwest of Wansford, and I highly recommend traveling to that location. There are several city streets and side streets, as well as county roads that run adjacent to the yard, which will provide you multiple public areas to railfan. There is also the Tekoppel Overpass that crosses over South Howell, which will provide another great spot for photography purposes. Additionally, the old St. Louis Sub that runs West (Railroad North) From North Howell provides an excellent railfanning experience. This line is operated by Evansville Western Railway, and several CSX run through coal drags and a mine run travel on this line, as does the EVWR Evansville Transfer, the Mt. Vernon Local, and several rail to barge coal drags."

Pretty much the entire Howell yard facility can be seen from this view looking south.

CSX Transportation CSXT 756 GE ES44AC-H Leading I029 thought Howell yard as a crew puts a train together on the yard lead. This is a pretty good view of Broadway Ave too as you can see a sharp curve at the tracks; it did originally go straight across the yard tracks called the five crossing. I don't know the year they took the crossing out but if you do know please leave a comment. In Evansville, Indiana on October 28, 2022.

I've seen more photos of wooden towers than steel towers. Of course, many of the towers were concrete.

According to a 1952 historic aerial, the land scar we can still see was the smaller of two roundhouses. The big clump of trees south of Jackson Street was part of the larger roundhouse. The edge of the large roundhouse was flat along Jackson Street. That is, it had different length stalls to fit it into the space that was available between Jackson Street and the original roundhouse.

Nickel Plate Railroad Roundhouses, Conneaut, OH (c. 1950)

Pictured are the Nickel Plate Railroad roundhouses at Conneaut, Ohio. The smaller roundhouse (right) was built at the dawn of the railroad in 1882. The larger roundhouse (left) was built in 1911. The 1882 roundhouse was demolished in September, 1961, while the 1911 roundhouse managed a little over a decade more before being demolished in January, 1973. The second picture shows the current yard, as operated by Norfolk and Southern. You can barely make out the outlines of where the roundhouses once stood.
