These are notes I am writing to help me learn our industrial history. They are my best understanding, but that does not mean they are a correct understanding.

Lafayette, IN: Caterpillar Large Engine Center built in 1981
This plant makes big diesels for marine applications, e.g. towboats. Caterpillar's Progress Rail (formerly EMD) used to make the engines in LaGrange, IL. Those 600 jobs were moved from Illinois to North Carolina about a year ago. I wonder which engines are coupled with an alternator to make gensets for emergency backup power? (Only two of their genset engines are Tier 4 compliant, and they are small units. Furthermore, 3516C Tier 4 is "U.S. EPA Certified for Non-Emergency Stationary Genset." Since the normal market for small gensets is emergency backup power, this "Tier 4" seems to be just a marketing ploy. I believe the Amish prefer propane gensets or solar panels and batteries to keep off the grid. And I doubt if there are enough households in the wilderness and/or survivalists to make a noticeable market. Especially for Tier 4 products.)
