Cleveland, OH: 1892 Aquarium/Power Plant

(3D Satellite, 22,482 photos!)

The aquarium is a repurposed power plant, which explains the smokestacks. It is nice that they have preserved them. I could not find a history of the building on their web site. Between the two stacks we see the abandoned B&O Bridge #463.

Jeremy Schenker posted 16 photos with the comment: "We went to the Greater Cleveland Aquarium today! I did not know it was an old Power Plant. It is pretty neat how they incorporated some of the old plant into the aquarium."
David Adkins: 20 some yrs ago they had bars and comedy clubs in there. It was a pretty popular place. One of the bars was “The howling at the moon saloon.”
Jack Haney: The power plant was for the lakeshore railway. There was another plant in Avon Lake by the presently decommissioned Genon Power Plant.
Chris Snyder: The maritime museum in Erie PA did the same thing except they left one of the steam turbines in place. It was also an old power plant. It has more of a powerplant feel to it than the cleveland aquarium
Sam McFarland: I had my wedding there!
Max Kaminski: There's no way that PVC firemain meets code.

Propped Productions posted four photos with the comment: "From powering Cleveland’s industry to powering its nightlife — this is the Powerhouse on the Flats. Built in 1892 to generate electricity for the city’s streetcars, its smokestacks once symbolized Cleveland’s industrial might. By the 1980s–90s, it transformed into the iconic Powerhouse entertainment complex — complete with arcades, clubs, and the famous “Power Play” that locals still remember. Today, it’s home to the Greater Cleveland Aquarium and the Jacobs Pavilion concert venue, keeping the Flats alive as a hub of culture and entertainment."

Clinton, IN: 1904 C&EI Museum/Depot and 1914 Freight House

Depot: (Satellite)
Freight: (Satellite)

Just a couple of blocks east of the freight house, the railroad crosses the Wabash River.

The depot was built in 1904 and is currently owned and operated by Little Italy Festival Town (LIFT). [IndState] This depot replaced a wooden depot built around 1870 by the Terre Haute and Evansville Railroad Co. "Local trains ran daily to mining locations just outside the city." Passenger service ended in the late 1960s, and the depot was renovated in the 1990s. The freight house was built in 1914 and restored in 2013. [csxthsociety-pdf]

Ted Dorsey posted ten photos with the comment: "The Chicago & Eastern Illinois railway station in Clinton Indiana (on the Chicago-Evansville mainline) last saw passenger service in 1968.  But the good folks in Clinton had the wisdom to preserve the depot, even convert it to a mining and railroad museum.  The line is still a very active CSX artery, with service from Chicago through Woodland Junction, Danville, and on to Terre Haute.  But alas, no passenger service.   7-22-22"

The only street view driver visit to Clinton caught the 2013 renovation in progress. This view shows how extensive the renovation was. It looks like CSX is also going to renovate some track somewhere.

The 2010 photo vs. the 2013 photo shows that there was a reason they completely replaced the roof.

Monon, IN: Depot, Display Cabooses and The Whistle Stop & Monon Connection Museum

Depot: (Satellite)
Downtown Monon Caboose: (Satellite)
Wabash Caboose at The Whistle Stop: (Satellite, using street view, I also found two Monon cabooses parked here.)

Bobby Becker posted three photos with the comment:
Another view of the beautiful Wabash Caboose on display in Monon, Indiana along with Monon equipment. The Monon Railroad, formally the Chicago Indianapolis & Louisville, crossed the Wabash mainline in nearby Delphi, Indiana. That is now Norfolk Southern's line across Indiana and Illinois to St. Louis.
Only short sections of the Monon remain.
There is a restaurant here containing more rail related items and lots of local history. The food isn't bad, either!

Dennis DeBruler commented on Dennis' share
Mark Niceley: I understand the one at the Monon, IN, crossing is actually an EJ&E Caboose, disguised as a Monon one. But it's the thought that counts!!

Actually, Bobby's photos were taken north of Monon, IN, at "The Whistle Stop / Monon Connection Museum."
Joseph Tuch Santucci posted two photos with the comment: "On display at the Whistle Stop restaurant and museum in Monon, IN."
Troy Kleman: Been inside of that caboose. Very nicely restored caboose!

Greg Kent: All railfans should visit this place. There are numerous RR signals that actually work but you must ask the owner to turn them on. Plus there is a RR themed restaurant with good food.
Tony Fleetwood: You can go inside too! https://youtu.be/GaVb-eBvhX8?si=bkxT5p_mGiRD_8y3

The Whistle Stop has a lot more than cabooses on display.
Street View, Oct 2023

It appears that none of the street view drivers got off the main drag (US-421) in this town. This is the best view I could get of the depot. I think CSX still uses it.

Even though this building is rather new looking, I think it was the depot because:
  • It parallels the mainline between Chicago and Indianapolis.
  • It is next to the original north/south route.
  • It is consistent with a 1957 aerial photo.
  • It has a bay window with a dormer.
I'm surprised that this topo map did not mark the depot in the correct location.

Evidently, The Whistle Stop has a museum as well as a restaurant.
