Monon, IN: Depot Display Cabooses

Depot: (Satellite)
A Caboose: (Satellite)

Street View

Bobby Becker posted three photos with the comment:
Another view of the beautiful Wabash Caboose on display in Monon, Indiana along with Monon equipment. The Monon Railroad, formally the Chicago Indianapolis & Louisville, crossed the Wabash mainline in nearby Delphi, Indiana. That is now Norfolk Southern's line across Indiana and Illinois to St. Louis.
Only short sections of the Monon remain.
There is a restaurant here containing more rail related items and lots of local history. The food isn't bad, either!

Mark Niceley: I understand the one at the Monon, IN, crossing is actually an EJ&E Caboose, disguised as a Monon one. But it's the thought that counts!!

It appears that none of the street view drivers got off the main drag (US-421) in this town. This is the best view I could get of the depot. I think CSX still uses it.

Even though this building is rather new looking, I think it was the depot because:
  • It parallels the mainline between Chicago and Indianapolis.
  • It is next to the original north/south route.
  • It is consistent with a 1957 aerial photo.
  • It has a bay window with a dormer.
I'm surprised that this topo map did not mark the depot in the correct location.

  2. The Whistlestop Restaurant - it has a model train running on tracks inside. I posted waymarks of the cabooses, for example: https://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/wm10PXA_C_I_L_C_302_Monon_IN
