Downtown Monon Caboose: (Satellite)
Wabash Caboose at The Whistle Stop: (Satellite, using street view, I also found two Monon cabooses parked here.)

Bobby Becker posted three photos with the comment:
Another view of the beautiful Wabash Caboose on display in Monon, Indiana along with Monon equipment. The Monon Railroad, formally the Chicago Indianapolis & Louisville, crossed the Wabash mainline in nearby Delphi, Indiana. That is now Norfolk Southern's line across Indiana and Illinois to St. Louis.Only short sections of the Monon remain. There is a restaurant here containing more rail related items and lots of local history. The food isn't bad, either!

Dennis DeBruler commented on Dennis' share Mark Niceley: I understand the one at the Monon, IN, crossing is actually an EJ&E Caboose, disguised as a Monon one. But it's the thought that counts!! |
Actually, Bobby's photos were taken north of Monon, IN, at "The Whistle Stop / Monon Connection Museum."
Joseph Tuch Santucci posted two photos with the comment: "On display at the Whistle Stop restaurant and museum in Monon, IN."
Troy Kleman: Been inside of that caboose. Very nicely restored caboose!

Greg Kent: All railfans should visit this place. There are numerous RR signals that actually work but you must ask the owner to turn them on. Plus there is a RR themed restaurant with good food.
Tony Fleetwood: You can go inside too! https://youtu.be/GaVb-eBvhX8?si=bkxT5p_mGiRD_8y3

The Whistle Stop has a lot more than cabooses on display.

It appears that none of the street view drivers got off the main drag (US-421) in this town. This is the best view I could get of the depot. I think CSX still uses it.

Even though this building is rather new looking, I think it was the depot because:
- It parallels the mainline between Chicago and Indianapolis.
- It is next to the original north/south route.
- It is consistent with a 1957 aerial photo.
- It has a bay window with a dormer.
I'm surprised that this topo map did not mark the depot in the correct location.

ReplyDeleteThe Whistlestop Restaurant - it has a model train running on tracks inside. I posted waymarks of the cabooses, for example: https://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/wm10PXA_C_I_L_C_302_Monon_IN
