Port Colborne, ON: Three Grain Elevators and maybe some Milling

Robin Hood: (3D Satellite)
ADM Milling: (3D Satellite)
Port Terminal: (3D Satellite)

There also used to be an old Grand Trunk Grain Elevator on the land now occupied by the Marine Recycling Corporation.

Headed up to Port Colborne early this morning to catch Cuyahoga and Frontenac and got a bonus shot of CSL Niagara passing by. Nice way to end a season.

"With 2.2 million bushels of grain storage capacity, Ceres Port Colborne can handle rail, ship and truck both loading and unloading. The facility is located in an area that can service many food and feed channels in the Niagara Regions Grain Belt and located directly in Carbohydrate Valley."

It handles about everything except corn: Winter, Spring and Soft Red Wheat, Oats, Soybeans and Rye.
Jack Daw: I love that there is a region called Carbohydrate Valley.
Chris Allen: When the Frontenac was an ore carrier she ran aground in Silver Bay, MN around 1979.

Port Colborne is at the south end of the Welland Canal and the channel at the top of this image is the canal.

Ceres Global Ag Corp.has announced that it has completed the sale of its Port Colborne facility in Ontario to London Agricultural Commodities on February 17, 2023, for gross proceeds of USD $4.0 million. All former Ceres employees at the terminal will transition to LAC.
Brian R. Wroblewski: Riverland Ag bought it maybe 10 years ago & reopened it for inbound grain with a self-unloader hopper. Then they sold it to Ceres who then hung a boat loader on it & kept it active by partnering with a UK based grain broker until this new sale.
Darryl Harper: Have wondered the purpose of the section on the left, almost looks like an apartment building with all those windows ?
Dennis DeBruler: Darryl Harper That probably housed the milling machines that made the flour. I doubt if the recent owners use that part.

Bruce Maxwell posted five photos with the comment: "A curious peek inside the former Robin Hood flour mill in Port Colborne to accompany this week's media announcement. Photos were from a 2019 personal tour with the Ceres site manager. CERES GLOBAL AG CORP. HAS ANNOUNCED THAT IT HAS COMPLETED THE SALE OF ITS PORT COLBORNE FACILITY TO LONDON AGRICULTURAL COMMODITIES FOR GROSS PROCEEDS OF USD $4.0 MILLION. ALL FORMER CERES EMPLOYEES AT THE TERMINAL WILL TRANSITION TO LAC."
Nathan Sauer: This is very good. It was ran awful for farmers before when lac only rented it. Now they will likely have way longer hours at harvest.

Brian R. Wroblewski: Good news! Too bad Ceres didn't buy Lake & Rail too. Riverland Ag. sold them Robin Hood in PC right before they closed their Buffalo plant. Ceres sank some serious coin into RH & hung a boat loader on it. Riverland was planning that here before they decided to shut down instead.

Farewell to Manistee, she has reached her final resting place…

The Maxima entering Lake Erie with the Pilot Boat, from the Welland Canal at Port Colborne, Ontario, Canada last night, close to midnight.  She is on her maiden voyage through the Great Lakes.  She is dubbed the "greenest multipurpose vessel in her class". It has superior fuel efficiency and an oversized cargo hold for her dimensions. Her efficient engine and aerodynamic hull results in a 60% CO2 emissions, compared to her peers!  She is also designed to operate in difficult ice conditions.  Sailing under the flag of the Netherlands for Royal Wagenborg, she certainly brings a new modern look to the Great Lakes! A big welcome Maxima and her crew, I hope that we see more of you!

Winter Layup

Reports of this fire taught me that the canal walls are used for winter layup docks. That is the Clarence Street (#21) Bridge in the background.

Today's small fire in the engine room of the Algoma Discovery appears to have not been major and was put out quickly. I'm sure there will be a lot of clean up involved and we will certainly hear more in the days that follow. Lets not speculate but hope she can get cleaned up and still make her ship out debut in about 3 weeks.

Bobby Dzz posted four photos with the comment: "Looks like there was a small fire in the engine room on Algoma Discovery in Port Colborne."

  1. Thank you for another insightful article. Where else might someone obtain that kind of knowledge written in such a professional manner? I have a presentation coming up next week, and I'm looking for relevant information.  Aerial Photography Mobile AL
