The Lima Locomotive Works produced the M4A1 Sherman tank. Since this 78-year old plant [2019] was built in 1941, it appears they built a new plant rather than retool their locomotive plant.
The Army awarded the [$700m] contract to defense contractor General Dynamics, which operates the 78-year-old Lima tank plant, to revamp its Abrams tank. The tank has been the military’s primary battle tank since 1980, but new models haven’t been built in more than 20 years. Instead, existing tanks are rolled out of storage and refurbished with new armor and technology.“The Abrams is the only thing that’s keeping the Russians in check, and the significant presence in the Middle East has also been essential to what’s been accomplished there. It’s a vital piece of the defense of this nation,” Mr. Berger said.
Lima’s tank plant is the only U.S. facility that makes the Abrams. The plant also manufactures the Stryker armored vehicle. Sterling Heights, Mich.-based General Dynamics said in a news release it plans to fulfill the Abrams tank order in Lima as well as its plants in Scranton, Pa., and Tallahassee, Fla.
Last month, the Joint Systems Manufacturing Center was selected as one of four facilities to develop new prototypes for another military vehicle, the Mobile Protected Firepower tank.
