The railroad is the former Great Northern.

[I was going to pass up yet another photo of a grain elevator until I learned these are new, big silos.]
Marc Mcclure Todd and Sargent project
Dennis DeBruler I thought steel bins had made concrete silos obsolete. I'm glad to learn that slipform construction is still used. https://www.tsargent.com/
John Harker Dollar per bushel cost of steel bins is far less expensive than concrete. Until a good old fashioned 80mph windstorm.
Dennis DeBruler Scroll about half way down this page and you will see some photos of storm damage that I have collected. https://industrialscenery.blogspot.com/.../steel-grain...
John Harker Dennis DeBruler ,very good
Marc Mcclure Concrete holds up so much better for the amount (weight) and speed of unit train loading.
Dennis DeBruler Many steel bins are storage bins and are loaded and unloaded once a year. This elevator looks more like a transloading facility from truck to train so the content of a silo would be going up and down all year long. I can see where the strength of concrete could better handle the variability of stresses. I.e. no metal fatigue.

Dennis DeBruler Even with big, modern concrete silos, they also use ground storage.
