Clarks Hill is another town that has lost both of its railroads. One reason for posting this picture is that you can clearly see the signalling pipeline that runs from the tower and then turns to control the turnout for the connecting track. I assume the building on the left is the junction tower and the building on the right is a joint depot. We are looking timetable east along the NKP. A 1963 topo map does not have the depot. But it does have the tower. The tower is strange because the first floor is open. That is normally where the interlocking machine is installed.
Update: I learned from
a Ridge Farm, IL, posting that a tower on stilts was standard practice for the Big Four. As part of the discussion of how flimsy these towers looked, James Coleman provided the following comment and picture.
The tower at Clarks Hill Ind was like this one and stood until closed and knocked down and Pagr trains 304 and 305 went by it at 80 mph and it still stood I worked there when these trains were still running.
