The GM&O's Eastern and Western Divisions (the former Alton) were always very distinct from the former M&O and GM&N lines south of St. Louis. In some ways it was like the 1947 merger never happened. My brother David stationed himself on the street overpass at the Bloomington, Illinois, depot to photograph Peoria & Eastern GP-7 units 5617 and 5622 leading their westbound across the GM&O diamonds. The view comes from February, 1958.

The NS and UP tracks still exist. Parts of the NYC route is now the Constitution Trail.

Roger Holmes posted Not long after the N&W and Southern merger this Peoria bound freight passes by the BN Target in Bloomington. The Conrail track closest to the photographer was removed in 1988. © Roger A. Holmes. Bill Edrington The former P&E looks rusty here. If I recall correctly Conrail started running over the NS between Bloomington and East Peoria about 1984 or so, and abandoned the P&E line via Mackinaw. Can't recall when Amtrak moved its Bloomington-Normal stop to the "Ambox" near the ISU campus in Normal, but the signs of neglect around the old station are evident. ICG no longer had a division headquarters there by this time, either. David Jordan The ICC officially approved Conrail's trackage rights eff. December 12, 1983 and Bloomington-Pekin was officially abandoned in August 1984. Most track was removed in summer 1986. Ex-P&E track through Bloomington was removed in 1988 (Roger Holmes' classic VHS, CENTRAL ILLINOIS RAILFANNING 1988, documents this change). David Jordan Amtrak opened its Normal depot in 1990. It has since been replaced by Uptown Station. Mark Egebrecht So Conrail stopped running on the P&E in late 1983? I heard somewhere that is was prone to wash-outs? David Jordan Mark Egebrecht The derailment involving PEIN on December 2, 1982 near Danvers was probably the beginning. I know Conrail detoured over the TP&W (via Kentland) for a time (the first detouring INPE was involved in a minor derailment at East Peoria two days later!), but eventually settled on the N&W. Filing for trackage rights is dated October 7, 1983, IIRC. |
Roger Holmes posted Bloomington's Peoria & Eastern switcher crossing the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio. The parallel track is the Norfolk & Western, former Nickel Plate. This photo was taken roughly half a century ago with my Argus C3 which carried a lifetime warranty. © Roger A. Holmes. Phil McCall I'll bet that smoking chimney is from the powerhouse for the GM&O shop complex, they had a central steam plant that heated all of the buildings.Roger Holmes You are correct Phil McCall. There was a three chime steam whistle on top of the building which was blown for the shifts. There was also a set of three whistles one of which was the largest steam whistle in the state of Illinois including the Great Lakes freighters.. The shops had their own fire brigade and the whistle complex blew a code as to where the brigade needed to respond. Those three whistles are on display next to NKP 639 in Bloomington. |
Roger commented on the above posting This photo of an N&W freight at the same location might show a little different perspective as to where I was when I shot the P&E switcher...I was standing on the bridge seen in the photo and the 3 story building was, on the ground level, the passenger station with dispatcher's office, superintendent's office on the second floor along with other offices and communications on the second and third floors...all GM&O. Photo © Roger A. Holmes. Mark Egebrecht I believe that foot bridge is right where the stone bridge was. |

Dennis DeBruler commented on Zydek's comment on Mike's post Yes. The roof is barely peaking over the boxcars. You can see some of the wheels that guide the roof as it goes up and down to keep the gas pressure constant.
