The crossing guard tower and city water tower in the background of the above photo were about a block away.

Bill Molony posted Chicago, Burlington & Quincy class O-5A 4-8-4 Northern-type #5617, passing the tower at Somonauk, Illinois at 50 miles an hour, westbound with train #67 on October 7, 1942. The 5617 was built at the CB&Q's Quincy Shops in 1939. [Note that you can see three pipelines turn sideways around the wheels of the locomotive. There are also some side bars visible down by the tower. Judging by the signals next to the tower, it must also do train orders.] |
