Bill Molony posted This is the original Chicago & Eastern Illinois Railroad depot in Steger, Illinois. My understanding is that it was located on the east side of the C&EI tracks and on the north side of Steger Road. It was destroyed by fire in about 1916.[It is now part of a parking lot for a strip mall. In another posting Bill indicates the photo is circa 1905.]

Joseph JD Ray I remember the remains of the piano factory, then Kmart was built. Now even that's gone. The town hasn't thrived in years :(

Bill Molony posted The Chicago & Eastern Illinois Railroad station in Steger, Illinois, shortly after it was completed in 1917. Eric Cook Got any pics looking south? I'm interested in how the C&EI served the Steger piano factory, the white building just north over 34st (Steger Rd.)Bill Molony This station is on the south side of Steger Road (34th Street) and on the west side of the tracks. It's still there, but it is being used as a contractor's shop and it has been heavily modified.Eric Cook Yes...I grew up about 2 blocks from it. Old enough I guess to remember the barber shop and movie theater west of it. The factory was just a foundation that we hiked over on our way to the Junior High. Have never been able to find any shots of the factory track side...all show it from the west and south. |

Todd Lewis posted Sad to see this once majestic station from the C&EI fall into disrepair. It's purpose forever changed since none of the C&EI named trains, nor the C&EI itself exist anymore. It's been relegated to a storage shed for a fencing company. If only to see a passenger train stop here once more to receive passengers. Steger,il. 092722 |
