Sheerness, UK: 1972-2011 Sheerness Steel

(Satellite, the land is now a car import facility)

I normally ignore foreign steel mills because learning the USA steel industry is already a significant challenge. But one of the topics I want to explore is the evolution of factory control technology from manual, to PCL (Programmable Controller Logic) to computers; and this is the only good photo of control equipment from its era that I have seen.

Me covering first melter at Sheerness Steel think about 1987 great times 100 ton electric arc furnace control room.

Sheerness Steel was built in South East England on the depressing Isle of Sheppey a real dump.
Opened in 1972 as a Mini Mill to produce Reinforcing Bars for the Construction industry.
Had a chequered history of various owners, some rather dubious.
Closed and reopened several times, no steel made after 2011.
Site demolished and now a Car import site I believe.

Man our control room looks a lot different.
