Tobermory, ON: Chi Cheemaun Ferry

Chi-Cheemaun (1974 Canada) was in dry dock at Heddle Shipyards on Boxing Day 2021 in Thunder Bay.
Rick Stout: In the winter of 1971-72 Owen Sound Transportation President W.W. (Wib) Barnard sat in our rec room in our house in Owen Sound and told my father and I it was time for a new ferry from Tobermory to the Island. Wib was a close friend of my dads. He explained that traffic was getting too much for the Norisle and Norgoma. He continued to say it would be between three and four hundred feet and it would be a "Ro Ro" ferry. At 11yrs old I asked Mr.Barnard what a "Ro Ro" ferry was. He explained the bow and stern would open and cars would drive on and drive off. Hesaid it would be like the ferries in BC. He also said the new ship would do the crossing in 1hr 45 minutes compared to the old boats at 3 hrs. After that Wib kept us updated on blue prints, model trials and finally the 365ft ship was being built at Collingwood Shipyard. On a cold January 12, 1974 my father, his friend and me drove to Collingwood and half froze to death waiting for 11:45 when the ship slid down the ways into Georgian Bay for the first time. I remember it rolled and rolled for 15 minutes after it was launched. It was only in the water for a short time before being moved into the dry dock to be finished. It had to be launched off the ways as the Algoma ship Algosoo was over half built and it would be launched later in 1974.

Patrick Callaghan: Chi-Cheemaun is Ojibway for "Big Canoe".
Rick Stout: Patrick Callaghan..The original name Mr Keeshig from Cape Croker submitted was "Itchi Cheemaun" likely meaning the same but at christening it was changed to "Chi" instead of "Itchi"

The CHI CHEEMAUN ferry is heading to Owen Sound for the winter.
She's pretty AMAZING in person, can't lie. The prettiest ferry I've ever seen. Was in awe of her when I saw her a week ago in Tobermory.
Until next year Chee!!
Milo Banbury: Isn't it a little early?
Ashleigh Van: Milo Banbury it's always the weekend after [Canadian] Thanksgiving

On my way to pick up my daughter at work tonight... I couldn't resist getting another reflection capture of the Chi-Cheemaun in this very still December Harbour.

Mike McGinnis: I'm always glad to see photos of the ship that I helped to build and launch, at Collingwood Shipyards, in the early 70s.
Michael Vanderharst: The caption says Owen Sound? I'm assuming this is in Tobermory or the Island, right? Think it was about 2wks into service when we were stuck on it for few days..on rocks in Lake Huron. Beginning of the 80,s. Nice to see it is in good shape and operating. Was a wonder, technically, then. [I was wondering about "Owen Sound."]
