This Mammoth Mine started production in 2019. Blaschak Anthracite has an older
mine near Mahanoy City, PA. "The Mt. Carmel project has required the excavation of more than 2.5 million yards of overburden, as well as the design and construction of a pumping system, to handle mine pool and surface water. The coal will be extracted from the Mammoth seam, which is 50 feet thick in some locations and one of approximately 13 seams of coal in the anthracite region." [
SkookNews, this page has some video of the 7450 working.]

BlaschakAnthracite Anthracite is environmentally friendly.- All mining is done on previously mined land that is completely reclaimed and restored.
- We replenish forest land on old mine sites.
- Mining re-establishes erosion and sedimentation controls that allow rain water to flow to streams naturally.
Anthracite is in high demand by a variety of industries:- Glass manufacturing
- Home and institutional heating
- Industrial heating
- Steel production
- Sugar production
- Water treatment and water filtration
- Coal-fired pizza
- Smelting
- Steel dust recycling
- Battery recycling

One of the more unique things with Anthracite is that this dragline strips overburden and coal. The operator meticulously sorts through the two all the time. Thanks to Blaschak for having me and my buddies out to tour the operation!"

Abandoned underground mines discharge acidic water into the headwaters of the Lehigh, Schuylkill, and Susquehanna rivers. Blaschak Anthracite daylights those mine tunnels, removes the remaining coal and then restores the land. The land is restored so that rain flows naturally to the area streams rather than percolate through the mine and then depositing contaminated water into the streams.

Robert Wanner posted Postcard of P&R Reading Company station in downtown Mt Carmel, Pennsylvania. This is not Mt Carmel Junction, but the station that sat at the top of the hill along what became Rt 61 in Mt Carmel that was connected to the Junction by a shuttle train at one time long ago. Collection of Robert Wanner.
|
A shuttle was needed because the Locust Mountain forced the mainline to pass south of the town.

4:20 video @ 0:54 We call this pre-washing the coal. The Marion 7450 is working in a wet pit, while the new Caterpillar 6020B is busy pre-stripping above. Just another day at Blaschak Anthracite Mt. Carmel. |
