Is Portal #9 the only mine head that is feeding the prep plant?
IronSenergy_facility
"The Cumberland #9 portal is a centralized hub for the operation, which includes the miner’s bathhouse, shaft elevator, training center, and communication within the company. It helps to streamline processes, enhance collaboration, and provide employees with easy access to essential resources."

IronSenergy
"The Prep Plant is a core foundation of our operation, transforming raw coal into a valuable resource. Through our advanced process, the prep plant cleans, sorts, and sizes the coal, ensuring it meets quality standards of our customers. Our Prep Plant facility also contains our raw coal stockpiles, warehouse and clean coal loadout."

IronSenergy_facility
"Once completing the process at the Prep Plant, all of Iron Senergy’s coal is transported 17 miles from the Prep Plant to Alicia Harbor, where it is loaded onto barges along the Monongahela River. This then allows our team to then deliver to customers locally or the ability to offload to our Labelle Facility."

Note that barge traffic between Alicia and LaBelle uses the Maxwell Lock.

IronSenergy_facility
"Also located along the Monongahela River is our LaBelle facility, which provides robust ground storage and the ability to load both Class I railroads. Conveniently located, LaBelle offers access to all east coast export terminals."

IronSenergy_facility
"Iron Senergy also owns and operates our own 17-mile short line railway that transports clean coal from our Preparation Plant in Kirby, PA to Alicia Harbor, located in Alicia, PA.
"As of 2024, the Cumberland Mine Railroad was the longest privately owned railroad in the United States."

Valentine, AZ: US-66 Gas Stations and Motels

Hackberry, AZ, just a little west of here, has a museum with several old gas pumps.

"Crusing" US-66 from east to west.

Across the road from the gas station are some remnants of a motel. I was careful to include the rain clouds in this view. I wonder how often that happens in Arizona.

No other view had rain clouds.

Chief's Motel Sign (Satellite)

A little west of the motel, Google Maps labels this "Chief's Motel sign."

I guess these buildings used to be part of that motel.

I wonder what the owner thinks about Trump's ego war with Iran.

These pumps are probably from the 1970s instead of 1940s, but they are historic because they compute the price with gears instead of computer chips. (And they don't play any commercials on a screen.) I could not find a view with enough resolution to verify, but I'll bet that the pumps can't handle prices over 99.9 cents per gallon.
Street View, Oct 2025

While trying to find a good closeup of the pumps, I discovered that they were installed after 2011.
Street View, Oct 2011

I wonder how much business these places will get after the 100th aniversary of Route 66 is over.

[Note the Pennsy positional light signals in this and the following photo. Also because of the buildings in the background the Contrail train is heading geographically South. That put the tower in the southeast quadrant.]

Scottsville, KY: 1886 Restored/L&N Depot

(Satellite)

Gary Miller posted two photos with the comment: "This is the Scottsville, KY train depot, originally built in 1887 for the Chesapeake & Nashville Railroad. Passenger service ended in the mid-1900s, and the station officially closed in the 1970. It served as a construction storage facility for roughly 50 years and has been undergoing a complete restoration of the 2-story building with the help of several foundation grants and donations from the general public. There is a restored L&N diesel on site as well as a caboose in need of repair."
Tyler Turpin: That L and N diesel is a GE 70 ton that was Tropicana’s in New Jersey mid 1970s to early 2000s . Several preserved GP7 and 9 including major rebuilds handled the Tropicana cars from Florida to the plant .
Todd Gipson: Tyler Turpin it is also the last L&N locomotive to service Scottsville. Our next open house is July 18, 10-2. Come see us!

They are not kidding about a "complete restoration." It looks like they built the two-story part from scratch including a new foundation.

Just nine months later, the 2-story part is done.

A clear view of the locomotive back when it still had its Tropicana orange paint job.

"Built in 1886, the Scottsville Train Depot served as a vital passenger and freight station for nearly 90 years."

Albia, IA: Lost/CB&Q Depot

Alma Ingram posted
Albia, lowa Depot

CB&Q's mainline to Denver is the east/west route. A CB&Q branch to Des Moines goes to the Northwest. And a CB&Q bypass goes along the south side of town. All of these routes still exist. The C&NW/M&StL and Wabash routes also still exist. I wonder why they built the bypass. I studied the contour lines, and I don't think the bypass has better grades than the original route through town.

The blue line is UP, so it kept the C&NW/M&StL down to Bridgeport. This map does not specify an owner for the route south of Bridgeport. The Wabash route south of Albia is now owned by Iowa Southern Railway (ISRY)
National Rail Network Map

I wonder when the BNSF route south of Bridgeport down to their mainline was built and why. As recently as 1982, that route did not exist.

In addition to using a former-Wabash route, ISRY also uses a former Rock Island route.
